Wow! I have been really on the fence about this radio, and those pictures make me glad I did not spend $650 for that! That is really awkward looking. How does one even hold that?

Whistler's turn.

Upman, will you be sending out cigars when it gives birth?

Buy one and find out. Then you will know.

Wow......well.......I think it's a good thing. I'm so glad they realized the battery life was "unacceptable" and are providing a fix. The extra heft is good and more stable base is also a "good" thing IMO Thanks for the comparison photos!

What makes no sense to me as why Uniden hasn't just made a removable battery pack and drop in charger like their marine radio or the same form factor. While I appreciate the fact Uniden is addressing the battery life issue; just image how long it's going to take to charge that thing attached to the radio; after all, the current battery already takes forever. Why the didn't go with AA's again I have no idea. I'm very sad to have once again been a Uniden beta tester; I should have stuck to my guns. Oh well, encryption will soon take over and they'll be no need to be a paying beta tester again.

AA's would need replaced every 2-3 hours due to the higher power usage on this device.

They could have added a fourth cell; nevertheless, AA's can be had anytime/anywhere; perhaps battery life should have been as high of a concern in testing as was simulcast operation was; while so many other things got overlooked by the original beta testing team. Anyway, not worth a discussion at this point; Uniden has always treated their customers as beta testers...

Looks more stable a base!

Well it sure wont TILT over very easy.

Agreed looks more stable a base! My question is when do we current users start to get ours and is there any mention of an external charger? I'd prefer to charge one at a time and swap them out to give me overall better Portable battery life!

It will be about 8mm thicker. Main cabinet isn't changing. Just a bit deeper battery door.

A bit deeper? That's an understatement for sure. What I really don't understand is why the original battery is as big as it is with only 3600mah?? I'm admittedly not a battery expert but I have seen cell phone batteries (and others) that had 3600mha in smaller dimensions. Maybe it's the battery type/chemistry used. Maybe it would cost more. But the new battery and door make a great looking radio look ridiculous. Change suppliers. Please do what it takes to get 5400mah (or more) into the same dimensions as the original battery. I believe it can be done. Thanks.

They could have added a fourth cell...
Which would still fall far short of what even the small Li-ion pack delivers.
...perhaps battery life should have been as high of a concern in testing as was simulcast operation was...
Guess you know of a better engine than the SDR to deliver a wideband scanner that also handles simulcast, while not breaking the bank?
...Uniden has always treated their customers as beta testers...
Which 99% of us expected, and have been happy to participate. This is commonplace for specialty electronics from many manufacturers. Besides, mine worked pretty much perfectly out of the box, LOL.

This is an interesting statement. Would you name 3 or 6? I honestly can't think of any companies that have expected me to beta test their products after release. Maybe I don;t understand what you are saying. Thanks.
Oppo, a very well-respected (former) maker of high-performance optical disc players, immediately came to mind. There are many others in the home theater market (with it's constantly evolving mess of "standards") - very common for customers to happily help iron out additional bugs (post-beta testing) just so they can get the latest equipment into their system. I don't feel any need to produce a list. Just as with the SDS, the real beta testing is always first done with a small group of experts, but it can't go on forever. As we demand more from our electronics, they get more complicated. All these noisy folks around here that so casually trivialize new product development simply suffer from technological ignorance, IMO.

Charging time of 5400mAh is almost 8 Hours

Looks like its going to take a long time to charge.

At 700mA it's going to be right at 7.71 hours to fully charge.

Whoa! That is some added thickness there! It's going to look a lot better in a case that's actually designed for it, I bet. Yeah, doesn't look to tip very easy. Ugly as sin, but whatever works. Good thing it's got such a beautiful display to distract you from the scanner body - yowch

Whoops - I accidently posted to the wrong thread, was in another thread via a link to the photos of the new SDS100 larger battery and door...sorry bout that

If you have confirmed that your car power supply can provide 1 amp or more, check your USB cable. I had that problem, and replaced it with the OEM cable from the SDS box, and it fixed the problem. To diagnose it, I added the USB-1 and USB-2 indicators on the display to see what the input voltage was. If it's less than about 4.5v, the radio will shut off the simultaneous charge and run option, and it will never turn it back on, unless you go into the Battery Options menu and reset it.

As bob-k says, even though it doesn't charge, the upper USB input will run the radio. That would help you.
