Greetings,

I am the feed provider for KWO-35 NOAA Weather Radio, New York City, the feed was put on the air at the request of the Upton, NY National Weather Service, we are the Spotter Coordinator for Hudson County and the NYC Metro Area assigned by the National Weather Service we also are the official cooperative weather station for Hudson County station - HSNN4.

According to the National Weather Service Officials, I spoke to this transmitter we be out of service beyond a couple of months. so instead of having dead air on the feed I figured we would do the best we can providing NOAA Weather Radio out of Howell Township NJ this is station is giving us the best reception on a discone antenna located about 60 feet above the ground.

Questions / Comments are welcomed.

Tony Mondaro
NWS Hudson County - Regional Skywarn Coordinator
NWS Cooperative Observer - HSNN4

Station - HSNN4

Thank you for the update Mondaro, hopefully KWO-35 will eventually be up and transmitting, it's like a dependable old friend, always there with up-to-date weather information.

KWO35 outage caused by failed lease negotiations

Sorry to be so late posting to this thread; I've been incredibly busy lately with work and this is the first that I've logged into the RR Forums in literally a month's time.

I'd like to point out something, that I don't see mentioned earlier in this thread, related to the cause of the present outage of station KWO35.

As per NOAA Weather Radio - Viewing Outages

On the above-referenced Web page, under Special Notices, there's an entry titled KWO35 New York City, NY transmitter removed from service (11/28/17). If you click on the plus sign (+) to expand that entry, you'll see where it says, in part, the following:
KWO35 New York, NY (frequency 162.550) has been removed from service due to failed lease negotiations. We are searching for an alternate location but do not yet have a date for return to service.

As one of those persons who strongly believes that the National Weather Service radio broadcasts are an essential public service even in these times of widespread smartphone ownership, my question is why wasn't a new tower location secured long before the lease expiration date?

It seems to me that if this had been done, the current service outage might have been avoided.

Regards,

Frank...who sincerely hopes that KWO35 will be returning to the air soon.

P.S. Thank you, Tony, for your flexibility in this situation!

KWO-35 extended downtime, a coincidence?

For Immediate Release
CHAIRMAN PAI PROPOSES IMPROVEMENTS TO
WIRELESS EMERGENCY ALERTS
Proposed New Rules Would Improve Geographic Targeting of Alerts
--
WASHINGTON, January 8, 2018—Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai
issued the following statement on the proposal he circulated today to improve Wireless
Emergency Alerts:
“When disaster strikes, it’s critical that Americans receive the information they need to stay
safe. During the last few months, we’ve seen that Wireless Emergency Alerts are an important
tool for quickly delivering warnings in times of emergency. Whether you are in the path of a
hurricane or a wildfire, you can receive life-saving alerts on your mobile device. Recently, the
FCC has been looking at ways to make Wireless Emergency Alerts more effective and keep the
American people safer. To that end, earlier today I shared with my colleagues proposed new
rules to do just that.

Continues here in ,pdf format:

My view on this - knowing how government works- they take it down for a few months and judge if there's any public outcry. They then drag it out as long as possible giving implausible excuses as to its absence. Finally a year or 2 into it they declare that in an effort to stem global climate change they are pursuing new technology frontiers in communications, all of which of course have nothing to do with the original issues!

this is been going on for a few years now---Lease??? thats New to me---the Major Problem was and posted on here somewhere was the Txmitter was Splashing or should i say interfering with coast guard channels---yes i know 35 has been on for many many years with no Problems until recent-now its a bother

You would think the FCC Idiot would work on helping 35 stay and find the cg somewhere else to go since they have a crap load of freqs to use but instead cell alert redundency is more important in his eyes---we all or most have this in an app someway or another--isnt noaa a federal agency???what happened the govt dosent want to pay rent---well there are plenty of other govt propertys in ny to set up 35--this sounds to me like just another cost cutting measure---go on the outage map there is a bunch out of service and downgraded in power across the country

Yah thats gonna go over well when the cell site goes down or a power outage---Its Bad Enough that Some Phones are Limited to x-amount of words per text

well i guess this is what you get for putting former at&t lawyer &cell protector in charge of the fcc---Look at Net Nutrality---wait things are just gonna get worse

just my point of view

The FCC has nothing to do with either NOAA Weather Radio or the Coast Guard. Both are assigned by the NTIA.
And the NTIA has nothing to do with site leases for a different federal agency.

And if the interference was to one of the marine channels, like channel 16, that is a worldwide allocation and can't be just changed.

scratching my head on that answer----ok so according to you fcc has nothing to do with noaa radio which txmitts on an allowcated frequency and regulates all freq spectrums--but inturn he wants to enhance cell notifications as listed in post # 29

You Might of Misunderstood what i was getting at--or maybe how i wrote it up

all im trying to say is that there are so many txmitters down across the country and all he is worried about he is pushing the cell phone tactics--as for 35 like i said there are plenty of govt owned property,s they could set the txmitters up on

I have been listening on the Sussex station on 162.500Mhz. I get a full quieting signal in Teaneck NJ. I do use an external antenna with my Yaesu FT-60R, but even with the 1/4 whip I can hear it very well.
That said, I rarely do listen anymore. It's mainly when I'm out hiking that I like to have the radio broadcasts. But even then, hiking on the A.T. here in the northeast, I can usually get a data signal on my phone so I can get forecasts that way.

As what was said earlier, I also use the NOAA broadcasts to track 2m band openings. I can sometimes get the Washington DC area station, those in PA (as far as Harrisburg), and north to Burlington VT.
