Update - near perfect signal at work - not too far away from home. There must be some local interference in my apartment.

@ anybody questioning the need for the station: In a blackout, smartphone weather apps won't work, because there won't be any internet service. You'll appreciate your radios then. Always have a good supply of batteries on hand as well.

UPDATE - 01/10/2020 KWO-35 162.550 MHz. (New York City)
System testing at reduced rf power outputs over the past few months is nearly completed. Currently, KWO-35 is on air with a small rack mounted transportable "flight case" base station operating at 400-watts. The permanent NOAA Weather Radio transmitter supporting KWO-35 at the Empire State Building is set to be installed in a couple of weeks. Verizon is currently working on the installation of telephone control ckts between the transmitter site at ESB and NWS OKX. In recent weeks there have been ongoing modem issues which in turn cause intermittent program audio failures (dead air) on 162.550 MHz. Hopefully everything remains on schedule without any additional setbacks, stay tuned!

Interesting that it is atop the Empire State building. In the '60's it was atop Rockefeller Center so it is closer to it's original home. Wonder how many times it has changed locations since it's original inception.
I remember when it first went on the air in the early 70's it was located in Central Park. they had to move it due to the building being constanly broken into and the equipment damaged. Remember that was the bad old days.
