• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I’m currently using a department issued APX but want to add more talk groups to the codeplug. The ASK is not writeprotected so I’m able to reprogram everything except the system and talk groups. Before I start diving into learning how to program NAS, I have a couple questions:

1. Assuming I’m able to bypass the system key using NAS, would I even need to worry about my radio affiliating since the system already recognizes the radio ID? If so, please explain why.
2. Can you strap KMF keys to NAS talk groups? (Yes I have the keys)
3. Where can I find a definitive guide to programming NAS? I’ve spent 5 hours searching batlab and RR and can only find threads talking about NAS and bits and pieces of actual programming instructions.

Before people start going off… yes I’m aware that the radio could transmit if programmed incorrectly. I will be doing my due diligence to make sure that doesn’t happen. Also, yes I could ask the city to add the talk groups but I enjoy programming as well as learning about programming so I’d rather see if NAS is feasible before I have to deal with bureaucracy.

Solution
NAS does not "bypass" the system key. You still need a system key in order to modify the trunking parameters. Yes, that includes adding new talkgroups.

There are a lot of red flags in your post that indicate that you don't even know where to start. You really had better think twice before screwing around with a subscriber that was issued by a public safety agency.

So now it's not allowed for people to throw in their 2 cent's worth? So who, exactly, died and made you the god of this forum?
As long as it's a public forum, you'll just have to live with the prospect of dealing with comments from the Great Unwashed Masses right alongside the blessed commentary from the Anointed Chosen.

Deal with it.

Do I sound a little different than usual? Maybe a bit less likely to take BS from people? It might be my testosterone supplements kicking in. Whatever.

Anyway, back on the original topic, my absolute advice is, if you are issued a radio, do nothing with it that you are not instructed to do by your supervisors. Don't even read it to see how it's programmed, even if it's not password protected or otherwise protected.

The reality is that the radio hobbyist community is very small and if you make a splash it'll reach every corner of this tiny pool pretty fast.
That can quickly result in unforeseen consequences for you and others. I would never advise talking about ANYTHING on here that you would want to keep a secret from.....really anybody.

SOMEBODY is always watching. Bet on it. Don't try to make me out to be the bad guy for daring to point that out.

Nope, I don't take instructions from you either. You could have said nothing but you decided to try to tell me what to do which is exactly the wrong thing to do.
Because you constantly fulfill this reputation of giving false or misleading information on this site and despite mods and admins telling you to cut it out you still feel the need to comment on everything with your attitude. People like you are the reason no one wants to ask comments on this site, because they are met with instant hostility after asking a question that some people that don't have the proper knowledge to understand.

Put yourself in their shoes, you come to a site for help. Maybe it's your first post ever. You know very limited about radios so you go to maybe the only place that you do know to ask questions. This site is filled with lots of people with a great wealth of knowledge. But instead of getting an educated reply you get an instant "YOU CANT DO THIS" or "YOULL GET IN LEGAL TROUBLE" and honestly, it's getting old.

Even on THIS thread it's clear and you self admit that you get information wrong regarding this topic. So instead why not let someone that can more properly address it handle it? And perhaps in a manner that's not so....aggressive?

You don't have to listen to what I say, heck you don't even have to agree. But take a second to understand how that looks for everyone else. Please don't think that this is an attack on you, you obviously have a lot of knowledge on a lot of various topics. But the way you come off is just wrong.
