Just curious if anybody out there in North Carolina or Eastern North Carolina has ever heard any SBI activity on viper. I believe it's probably all encrypted but I have not even heard any encrypted traffic?

They may use it but not be affiliated on the tower that you are listening to

Yeah that makes perfect sense but I know for a fact there's a lot of Investigations going on in my area by reading the news. Just curious as to why I don't even hear any encrypted traffic?

I have seen SBI active on VIPER a number of times, always encrypted.

When they are working with other agencies they aren't typically using SBI talkgroups, they also aren't like police departments doing a lot of talking, much of the communications are through cellphones.

Believe they use alot of the Statewide Event talkgroups randomly or at least what i expect from what im hearing sometimes..look under the Viper system and see the posted highlighted talkgroups..look at the question mark info which will show site/ freq info and listen to the recorded traffic.if the shown info is in your area then go from there and program that info into whatever you use..sdr dongle should work great or as i use NAS for best reception along with a scanner and soon, multiple sdr dongle set ups...back years ago they used unit numbers for example like 5-S-32,7-S-32(examples) on SHP freqs and Wildlife vhf, but this was years ago..But yes,i believe they are using Statewide Event Talkgroups randomly..

You go to the database (at the link above) you scroll down to the talkgroups list, and look for any TGs listed in blue. You can click on the blue talkgroups and listen (not sure if this is a premium feature or if it is available for everyone).

As said above, most SBI TGs are 100% encrypted, but you often hear them on the Statewide Events channels.

I suspect what little they say on VIPER is encrypted. Before I retired from Probation, we were issued VIPER radio…..all the new officers refused to use them. The state issued them “smartphones” and that’s all they carried. Would not be surprised if if SBI is doing the same thing.
