With y'all talking about encryption is makes me start to think. Now, PD's I completely understand going encrypted but FD's really have no real reason in my opinion. The fact that everyone says it will be fully encrypted, but there are no signs of encryption right now makes me wonder if some agencies will go encrypted and others, such as FD's will remain clear.

Agreed. Although I really don’t think PD’s have any true justification for encrypting routine operations either. Ive been in LE for over 15 years. Criminals using scanners is incredibly rare and the few that try still get caught. Police administration just wants to control the narrative and operating in the clear interferes with that

I agree, it may not be as rare today with cell phone scanner apps but to the point a city needs to encrypt because of criminals with scanners, there's likely already a problem. I think it can go very deep. There's a city near me in my state that went encrypted. The police chief invited the news media to ridealong for a day and they aired the cities dirty laundry. The town people commented online agreed with the news story. It got lots of attention. The council was pissed. There was real estate developers that backed out of investments because of it. It was very interesting reading of something beyond the narrative of keeping criminals from listening to police

Interesting. I’d like to read more about that city. Where was this?

I am still active law enforcement and have found that cell phone apps are a not-so-effective tool in evading police for a number of reasons. Streams are often not dependable (poorly tuned devices), scan multiple precincts/agencies/disciplines, and have a 1+ min delay. You’d have to really hope that the host scanner landed on all the right channels/traffic at the right times. Sure… people occasionally try… but we catch them anyway…

I agree. I just respect PD going encrypted over other government agencies such as FD, PW, DOT, etc.
