• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I use the rotary knob on top as a Zone Selector. I use the up/down arrows on the front panel as Channel UP and Channel DOWN. It's just a personal preference item. I have several zones with more than 16 channels, and I seldom program up more than 16 Zones. Your mileage may vary...

Remove the channel knob and remove the 16 channel stop so that the knob will continue to turn up or down more than the 16.

To bypass the 16-channel limit on the Kenwood NX-5200, you must physically remove the plastic physical stopper inside the rotary channel knob and ensure your radio is correctly programmed using the Kenwood KPG-D3N software to access more than 16 channels.

Physical Knob Modification
  1. Remove the Knob: Use a small pin to depress the metal locking tab located in the tiny hole on the back of the channel knob, then pull the knob off.
  2. Remove the Stopper: Underneath the knob, you will see a small white plastic piece acting as a physical stop. Simply pull or pry this piece out, and reinstall the knob.

Software Configuration
  1. Connect the Radio: Connect your NX-5200 to your PC using the programming cable and open the KPG-D1N software.
  2. Set Zone Channel Count: Navigate to the Zone settings in the tree view and ensure your zone has the capacity to hold up to the desired number of channels (you can have up to 512 channels per zone).
  3. Change Selector Limits: Go to Menu > Key Assignment and ensure your channel selector is set up appropriately, then write (program) the changes to the radio.
Note: Even with the physical stopper removed, the rotary knob will physically click and cycle continuously. You can either use the knob to scroll indefinitely or program the front/side keys as [Channel Up] / [Channel Down] to navigate.

Ok sir I did the seclector mod and have full rotation but I could not find where to make the zone have more channels … I mean I’ve programmed 21 channels in zone 4 and all show to be there in D1N how ever when I send to radio I have the first 16 then instead of going to 17 (1) on the channel selector the radio go back to channel 1….. is there something I’m missing maybe is there a place I need to tell it that zone has 21 channels even tho I’ve programmed them in the zone?

I don't have D1 with me, but I think you're looking for a setting called "Rollover End/Stop", possibly at Transceiver Settings > Optional Features > Optional Features 1 > Others or maybe on the page where you assign the channel function to the rotary selector: Transceiver Settings > Key Assignment > Top/Side.
