• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Anyone familiar with programming one of these beasties?

I have the computer connected to the repeater nic to nic, but it won't connect. Computer is setup to the same IP subnet as repeater.

Do you have the network interface on the PC set up to talk to it directly:

The default IP setting as the factory shipping condition is as follows.

• IP Address: 192.168.0.1

• Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

• Default Gateway: 192.168.0.254

You don't need a cross over cable. Direct PC to repeater should work. Adding a hub will work, also.

If you can ping it, then you are connected. I'd look at the repeater firmware version and the KPG-D7N version and make sure they are happy.

You might also be able to point your web browser at it and connect that way, but you cannot program through the web interface. But it's been a few years since I set ours up.

If you are on your own home network, make sure nothing else is using that same IP address.
In other words, make sure it is actually the repeater acknowledging the ping, and not something else. Pointing your web browser at the IP address would tell you for sure.

From the manual:

2.1.3.2 Connection procedure

(1) Connect the repeater to the PC using the ethernet cable.
(2) When power is applied, the repeater enters the user mode after completed the startup sequences.
(3) Depends on the type of communication with PC, the repeater may communicate with keeping user mode, otherwise the repeater may get out from the user mode e.g.

Reading FPU data: Keeps the user mode
Writing FPU data: Gets out from the user mode
PC test mode: Gets in Test Mode with “Test Mode” on the OLED display.

Note:
• The FPU data trying to write into the repeater must match the model type and Software option.
• If the USB-LAN adapter is used, the communication may fail. It is recommended to use it via HUB.

2.1.3.3 Ethernet cable description
(As PC programming interface cable)
The commercial ethernet cable is required to interface the repeater to the PC.
2.1.3.4 Programming software KPG-D7 (Ver. 2.00 or later)

description

The FPU is the programming software for the repeater. This software runs under Windows 10 or 11 on a PC.

The data can be created on the PC as new file or edited based on the saved data/the data read from the repeater. The programmed or edited data can be printed out. It is also possible to tune the repeater.

The default IP setting as the factory shipping condition is as follows.

• IP Address: 192.168.0.1
• Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
• Default Gateway: 192.168.0.254

I'm pinging the device. If I disconnect the cable, I can't ping it no more. In spite of being able to ping it, can't browse into it, and cannot read it with the software.

Newest firmware requires you to enable "Remote Access" and change some settings from the web UI, before the repeater can be programmed.

Once you get into the web UI, go to Maintenance -> System -> Security -> KPG-D7 Programming Software. You'll need to set a password, then should be able to program the repeater.

Thanks, kind of forgot about that in the update. That sounds like it'll solve the issue. But that's an annoying setup. I've got a few of these in remote locations on solar power, and accessing them can take an entire day. I've got some other issues with their firmware, I'll have to mention this….

As dapaq2 said it’s documented in a service bulletin on Kenwood MyTools. Can also find the info alongside the latest firmware release on MyTools. Not the most intuitive setup process!
