In my Bearcom days we setup for an NBA all star game with their IT guys. After lunch one of our guys said he could not get email, I did the usual checks, could ping the server but not send nor receive. I got their guy involved, he did what I did and we both were stumped. If you are on your own home network, make sure nothing else is using that same IP address.
In other words, make sure it is actually the repeater acknowledging the ping, and not something else. Pointing your web browser at the IP address would tell you for sure.
Then he asked me for the IP, it ended in .28.
He said "just before lunch I took 1-50 out of the pool and assigned those to printers".
I pinged an IP around .240, it was not there so I hard coded that and he got email. I went back to DHCP and by then the router had released the MAC to IP link from before lunch.
Like they said on the old SNL. "its always something".
