wasting money

Well, their VHF system was working just fine and if they were smart, they wouldn't have wasted money to make the switch in the first place. When something isn't broke, DON't FIX IT!! Knowing how dumb the MTA is, they'll waste another 210 million and probably still get poor results. Then, they'll raise the fares and make us all pay more once they start crying broke.

The only change is for the transit police. NYPD transit units can not talk to NYPD Patrol units directly without carrying 2 portables, with this change all units will have 1 radio to talk to each other. it will be just a matter of changing channels. the MTA VHF system that the trains use will stay the same. this is a joint project between the NYPD and the MTA.

Re-train Ops

I have monitored the train ops for the IRT DIV on 453.5375 with a pl of 127.3.

it was being rebroadcasted from 161.190. sounds like they will make the move to uhf as well!!!!!!!!

I hear an echo.

A simulcast does not indicate an impending move. Simulcasting means that trains and police can hear each other without either one having to carry multiple radios.

To further expand on Dave's last comment when an officer is in the "hole" a lot of the time he will get information from the trains as to what is going on. It is often the train crews that are the reporting parties to problems below ground. When the "NYC Transit PD" existed they were a separate agency with their own radio system. Now (present day) they are part of the NYPD and are referred to as the Transit Bureau. Very much like when Housing was merged. It is more efficient to have all your units able to communicate with each other and only carry one radio. Cross patching from VHF to UHF in this instance solves that depending on what is programmed in the officers portable. For many years that was an excuse of the surface commuter railroads (staying on VHF) being able to communicate with the rolling stock (trains). Again if a problem occurs it is usually reported by the train crew thru their radio system. They can communicate exactly where and what is happening. There have been several multi million dollar studies done and some of those recommendations have been implemented. It would be unfair to state that it is or was a waste of money nor is this a defense for any that may have occurred. Like SWN I have my own thoughts both for and against. Bottom line is don't look for the trains to be jumping to UHF any time soon.

Is the UHF system active at all yet? I'll be down in the area this weekend and I'm wondering if I should reprogram my NYPD files or leave the Transit VHF frequencies in place.

I have had the channels in my scanner and it has been quiet. I haven't heard anything. Anyone confirm if there is a new rx pl?

Just leave the VHF frequencies in your scanner, they have not switched over and it really does not look like they will be switching any time soon.

From what I heard from someone who work for transit, the system is not expected to be up for at least 1/2 year to 1 year.

Thanks. As it happens, I have both sets in the scanner.
