Well, this is quite odd. I put 155.220 MHz in my scanner and kept on picking up EMS dispatches but couldn't understand a word the dispatchers said. I mean, I heard no static, I just couldn't understand them. So, I thought to myself, prehaps they're using AM. Well, I was right. I heard a unit calling in and understood them clearly. I thought it was dispatch from another nearby county, but at the end of the dispatch, they said Ocean County. Now, I know in Ocean County dispatches on 155.205 MHz and uses 155.220 MHz as an EMS Rig-to-Rig channel in Dover Twp., but this is not an EMS Rig-To-Rig channel, this is a dispatch channel. I cannot believe this, does anyone else know more about this?

OK, keep your scanner on that frequency. It's not that busy.

Just as a point of information, the county does not hold an FCC license for the frequency. The only agency in Ocean County that does is the Silverton First Aid Squad, Dover Twp.

I locked on to it for about an hour and did hear a very weak transmission, a nightly radio test, from another agency, not Ocean County.

I heard about 3 different agencies on it. I heard a unit calling to base, I heard some guy cursing at another guy, and I heard the AM EMS dispatch. Were there any dispatches on 155.205 MHz during your time listening?

No dispatches at all. I heard some bursts of very heavy static that lasted a few seconds each time, but that's it, other than the nightly test, that was a very weak signal.

It sounds like Joseph11 is receiving an image or is close to one of Ocean county's transmitter sites for EMS 1.

I can believe that, but still, that doesn't explain why it's in AM.

The unit calling base and the people cursing at each other is more than likely Murphy's bus service. The EMS dispatch is probaly and image of OC EMS#1. If you drive down Old Freehold Rd, if you are old enough to legaly drive, and stop at Chestnut St. and park you scanner on 155.220 you will pick up images of OC EMS#1 dispatches even with a PL on the channel. Probaly what you are hearing is that or maybe skip from another state like Pennsy. 460.625 gets a lot of skip on that channel from Bucks County PA. 154.145 also gets Teterboro (think that is how it is spelled) when the sky is right too.

Thanks for the response, but that doesn't tell me how it changes from an FM signal to an AM signal.

I forgot about this, I'm right by the Beachwood FAS building.

The modulation perhaps sounds clearer to you in AM because of the characteristics of the AM mode. Adjacent channel interference from 155.205 is fairly common in sections of Ocean County.

Its not an AM signal. Its still FM.
It only sounds clearer to you in AM becuase you're not receiving it on it's intended frequency. There is a lot of mixing within a receiver when overload, intermodulation and an image occurs. Plus, it depends on the receiver you're using. Most cheap scanners will not filter out this type of interference.

I understand now.

As far as I know none of the radios manufactured by MOTOROLA & the OTHER major names have AM capability for the police/fire/ems bands. Most AM transmissions for communications take place in the aircraft and military bands.
