As an owner of a MR-8100A, I don't think that there's really any comparison between it and the 996T. I can't say I disagree with your suggestion to add the "large screen option," but keep in mind that the 996T prototype is a computer mock-up, and doesn't necessairly indicate what the production models will look like.
I agree; I was only comparing the two features of the large alphanumerics in the display and the ability to automute when transmitting on another radio - two necessary features that would be beneficial to this new model and any other future mobile/base model. But you must agree, there was nothing you couldn't see on an MR-8100, even from two or three feet away.

Uniden had it before, they can do it again.

BTW, the new ICOM IC-PCR1500 and IC-R1500 has a USB port (as opposed to the older IC-PCR100 and IC-PCR1000 models that had the RS-233C ports) for those of you who were discussing this earlier.

The pictures linked are from an artist's rendering. The actual display has larger fonts for most major informational content.

Automute

Oh, Project Manager.

Then UPMan, what did you think of the idea of an automute that conincided with transmission of another radio, like the Uniden MR-8100 had (and other scanning receivers)? This would be a particularly helpful aspect for public safety, governement, and business users.

"in-dash or mobile mount design"
I'm relatively new to scanning, whats that mean? Is there going to be a handheld model? Forgive me if it's been answered.

The in dash mount is the DIN-E size like most aftermarket CD players.

The handheld model is the BCD396T less a few features of the 996T.

Don't look for it in the scanner. I believe I've seen this done w/aftermarket black boxes (will have to search around). However, not by using RF detection...see the Yahoo thread for a good discussion of why it would be almost impossible to do this for general frequency detection/muting.

Ok, not sure why it was able to be done in the past and not now, but if you say...

Could you post the link to the Yahoo thread you to which you are referring?...I don't know which one you are talking about, sorry.

Thanks for everything.

Scannermaster used to sell an auto-mute device. Somewhere I do have one, never used it though.

ALL I ask for is that the DIN size rumor is true!!!

It can be a 780 with digital capability and nothing more and I'd be perfectly happy :)

GPS is an interesting concept... but only if it's possible to update "alert" coordinates real time, instead of having to "program" them in manually (or waste flash cycles, etc). Would make it easy to shove in live traffic hazard updates on the move.

If it's DIN, it will be installed ASAP :) And that's one more 780 on my rack in the house heheheh...

ps. thanks for keeping it serial. usb bites.

Rumor? Read the EIGHTH post in this thread. It lists some of the features:

"In- or Under-Dash Mounting (DIN-E Sleeve included)"

Post source: Paul Opitz (product manager for Uniden = as reliable as you can get)

Why do you think they would include a DIN-E sleve if it wasn't a DIN-E size scanner?

I like the video where Paul discussed the new scanners. The other one that looks like the BCD996T and includes Bear Tracker as well as GPS location scanning I suspect is non digital and designed to be sold to truckers at truckstops. If it is digital also that may be a killer prouct. I never realized that Uniden's BearTracker and Close Call were related but it makes sense now. The Bear Tracker was black and the 996 was grey. IMHO the black one looks better in the pictures.

The BCT-15 beartracker should sell in more than just truckstops. If you do a google seach of the BCT-8 or look at the now discontinued Radio Shack PRO-2051 you'll see it has a much wider sales market. In addition to GPS it serves as a lower cost quasi base model for those who will not need the APCO-25 decoding.

Gommert mentioned yesterday that the silver 996 was a mockup and that the black one was a working prototype.
