now that its been out for awhile, what is everyones opinion on the 2096? I have a pro-96 but was looking at the 2096 to keep as a base station at the house. And I'm sure this has already been answered but does win96 work with it?

Love it.

The last few versions of Win96 are fully compatible with it. The other versions had a very minor issue with the backlight settings. But, you should be using the latest version of Win96 anyway.

The volume control is really irritating, just a slight touch of it and you go from low volume level to very loud, much too sensitive.

Got my 2096 Friday

Bought from Scannermaster for $439. What a deal. No sales tax and modest shipping. Got it programmed that night using Win96. Have a combination of EDACS, MOT Trunked AND Digital systems here in Memphis. It is very sensitive and the digital sound is very good, not crappy like the Uniden complaints. I have it running at the same time as a Uniden 780 and it performs as well if not better on the trunked systems and sensitivity. Display is small, but readable. I am very pleased, especially at the price I paid. Love Win96 and kudos to Don Starr for providing us with wonderful software that makes programming a breeze, and has also taken care of the re-banding issue with his extended tables.

My problem is I move the squelch over more than I like it. I think it is more of a learning curve. The volume and squelch control the same way on the 97 I am getting better with it. If this is the only problem I ever have with this radio I can live with it.

Actually the newer Pro 2096 do have newer firmare. I just got one Friday and it is

CPU 1.2
DSP 1.2
VOC 1.0

Does anyone know what is different about the new firmware?

Is it to accommodate new hardware like the PRO-96 CPU V1.4?

Joe, I think that is exactly what it is. Just the 2096 equivalent of the Pro 96 version of 1.4

Only difference that I have noticed, aside from the louder robust audio, is that I now get the 40xxx tg's that I could not receive with the Original Pro 96 CPU

I have the original version of the Pro 96 bought back in Oct. 2003 with CPU 1.1 and DSP 1.2 that is still working great for me. Never did get the CPU upgraded for that one.

Comparing apples to apples, are you saying that 2096 V1.1 didn't receive those TGs? The 96 V1.3 fixed that problem long before the 2096 came out, and I would have expected that 2096 V1.1 would have been equivalent to 96 V1.3.

People have mentioned that there is no 1.2 on the RS web site, and have suggested calling RS. Well, history has shown that the RS CS people are some of the LAST to know about anything new, and if 2096 V1.2 is to accommodate new hardware, 1.2 might NOT be an update for the original version hardware (which would explain why 1.2 may never show up on the RS web site).

I think you misinterpreted my post. I meant this is that I now get the 40xxx tg's that I could not receive with the Original Pro 96 CPU

I still don't get them with the original firmware that I have in my Pro 96 that I got in Oct / 03

The cpu is indeed 1.2 on my new 2096 that I just got on Friday shipped from Scanners Unlimited.

I didn't misinterpret it - I asked for a clarification on it to compare the relevance of the change of the 2096 CPU to 1.2 to the issue you mentioned. It seems there is none.

If you want to compare apples to oranges, my BCD396T with firmware
1.(whatever) will receive LTR which my PRO-96 CPU 1.1 would not receive. BUT, the two have nothing to do with each other. Again: apples to oranges.

I merely asked for an apples to apples (2096 1.1 to 2096 1.2) comparison relative to the issue.

Again, the bug should have been (and I believe was) fixed with the 2096 CPU 1.1 as well (actually, I believe it never existed in the 2096 at all), and was definitely fixed in 96 CPU 1.3. The implication of your post is that 2096 1.2 fixes this problem. It does not. It may fix it from your view, but the issue was fixed over a year ago and is not directly relevant to 2096 CPU 1.2 at all, or even the PRO-2096 at all.

OK,

I am tired of this Joe. If you are going to twist around what I said so be it . A friend of mine has had his Pro 2096 for 5 months now with the cpu 1.1. He has been able to get those tg's no problem as you say.

I am only trying to say that I could not get them before with the version of Pro 96 that I have. Now that I have a 2096 also I can receive those mutual aid tg's that we have in the 40xxx area.

I don't know how it is that you are interpreting that I am saying version 1.1 of the Pro 2096 could not.

All Iam implying is that it is the newest CPU to come out with the newer
stock of Pr0 2096's just as was the case with the newer stock of Pro
96 radios that have firmware 1.4

Any how. Enough of this topic for me now.
