I have an old crystal-controlled Patrolman PRO-77A. Some of the channel indicator lamps are burned out.

Any sources for replacements?

PRO-77a lights

Hello.

How many bulbs do you need?
Where are you located?

I "designed out" the lights 20 years ago and put in a CPU with a digital LED display. So I am sure I have some bulbs around here.

Hi George,
I'm in Northern Calif. 4 of the bulbs are dead.

It seems the last time I looked in there, they are actually incandescent bulbs and not LEDs.

Pro-77 lights

Hi Will.

Yes, the original PRO-77 (and PRO-10) came with indicator lights (and only 8 channels). I made mine into 20 channel scanners with digital readouts (and a host of other features). Therefore, I have the bulbs that were originally in the scanners. I am not at home at this moment, but once there I will check and reply further. Where is Honcut (what county)? I am in the Sacramento area.

BTW, do you realize the lights are soldered in?

Take care,
George

Hi George,

Honcut is in extreme southern Butte county, about halfway between Marysville and Oroville. We are practically neighbors, I guess. I'm about an hour north of Sacto.

It's been about a year since I had it apart, but it does seem the bulbs are soldered in...not a problem. It seems like subminiature bulbs like that were common, but since LEDs are the norm these days, those little bulbs are difficult to find.

The 77 and 16 can use the standard 12v bulb with leads that RS carries. Just snip the wire close to the old bulb. The new ones are short on wire. Not only are the old ones soldered in place, but on the 16 and maybe on the 77 the lights are glued in. Never owned a 10 but glad to see there are more than one 77 still working.

Thaks for the info, mcema699.

This old 77 works very well. The audio is much better than I am used to from my handhelds. Sure, there are the limitations of only 8 channels, and of course, the crystals.

It was rescued from the dumptser of a local newspaper office that was being rebuilt after a USAF U-2 crashed into it several years ago. It was a relic even back then...;)

Bulbs for PRO-77 or PRO-10

It looks like he is correct and the Shack has the light you need - Catalog #: 272-1141.

If you run into problems let me know.

I own two PRO-77s and two PRO-10s and the sound quality from these scanners is much better than most of today's stuff. I use one scanner to monitor CHP and one for local FIRE depts. When everything went trunking, including much of the Sacramento Fire traffic, I had to get a trunking scanner. But then something happens on one trunking channel and when you lock on that channel, you do not hear everything else. So now I have 2 trunking scanners. It's a crazy hobby.

Good luck,
George

Not much trunking here...yet.

I do have a PRO-97, but I guess I'll replace the bulbs in the 77A and stock up on some for the future.

I'd like to see the customized version as well.

I replaced my dead bulbs today, and it is nice to have the visual reference to which channel is being received (as there is no other reference, LOL).

The new bulbs are MUCH smaller than the originals, but are visually indistinguishable through the lenses once they are installed. They are "floating" in there temporarily, but will be secured ASAP...with hot glue, probably.
