The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Another question, does the G5 automatically pick the strongest site? On VIPER here in NC, I monitor one county system via 3 sites and their respective control and alternate channels. I live near one, and as I travel south towards another, will that tower be the one that the G5 uses?

I've never seen a definitive description (from an authoritative source) of what the firmware does in this respect, but it does seem to pick the "best" site at first, and if the decode error rate exceeds some threshold, it tries again to find the "best" site at that point.

It's generally recommended to only program sites that carry your talkgroups of interest, for a given "system", otherwise you may miss out. You can configure multiple "systems", using different sets of sites, and use them with separate knob positions (perhaps in separate zones), e.g. if you travel between areas covered by a regional system.

My system on VIPER I monitor is broadcast on all the 3 sites, just in different parts of the county. I would expect that once I leave my house, and travel either far south or east the G5 will monitor those sites as I get further out from the site close by my home. I don't know I haven't tried it yet.
But I did notice today while listening at home, for a brief second I had an "Out of Range" notification and then it was back to normal. Pager didn't move off the place on my desk, and signal was easily -90.

My experience is it will lock onto the first "good" site BER-wise, regardless of RSSI. And it seems to stay on that site until the BER is around 5%. They don't sample adjacent sites like a subscriber does (well as least a MSI sub, I can't speak for others), so once it finds a good site it stays there until it's no longer usable (and that threshold is a little high in my opinion).

If u have multiple sites programmed for one system it doesn’t really pick the strongest one it scans through the frequencies u have programmed and the first one it gets a control channel on it stops. I have 24 of the NJICS sites programmed into one of my zones and depending on who I’m trying to listen to I have to unscrew the antenna and force it to scan to a different site

Figured it out, I was following an online program video and the guy was only adding in the control and alternate channels. Once I entered all of the site freq I’m up and running strong. Not too bad of a learning curve and man does this thing sound better than my SDS100!
wondering if I should sell off my sds100 type feeling

I see folks are getting Viper to work. I have traveled all over NC and my G5 will not lock on a Viper site. It shows out of range while my 536 sitting in the next cup holder locks on and works great. I have matched stuff up between both and still no luck. Is there something i am missing. Tried both the download via RR and setting it up myself.

Hello all!!

I've been experiencing a similar issue and have no idea how to fix it. I have both a G-5 and G-2 and get the dreaded "out of range" indication on both of them, but not simultaneously...

WyoLink P25 phaze I is the system, and I've had the G-5 since 2017 or so. I love how well it decodes, but I've been having trouble with the ONLY site I want to monitor!!! In the past, I've been able to program only one CC into the G-5 with FF as the site, and it follows the system beautifully throughout the entire state!

My recent issue happened about six months ago when the ONLY site I wish to monitor, goes "out of range". The most irritating part is the fact that I can see it, frequently drive within a couple hundred yards of it, and the pager will still have this issue... It will lock onto every site within 50 or so miles, except for the one I want!!

This is the entire reason I bought the G-2 in the first place... Same issue with it, but a cheap RadioShack scanner will pick up and decode the site just fine. However, it does work for a very limited time after programming either one of the pagers.

The only way I can receive anything from this particular site (on either one of the Unication pagers) is when I scan the voice channels as P25C, but there are issues with that as well...

The CC could be rotating. It's recommended that all frequencies be programmed just in case that happens.

Tried that already and it still doesn't seem to work... The entire reason for the purchase of the G-2 is because I thought there was a problem with the G-5 due to use, abuse, age etc... Both of them still work great, except for on the one site I want to listen to.

Not sure what "rotating CC" would have to do with my particular situation. Like I stated before, I have only ever needed to enter ONE valid CC to get either pager to lock onto any site in the state!!! Once it gets all of the CC info from the "programmed site", it loads all the info it needs to follow WyoLink perfectly!!

My particular issue is with the ONLY site in my area that goes "out of range" on both Unication pagers, but all traffic can still easily be heard by an obsolete scanner... I've recently run my Pro96Com software to see if the WACN or system ID info has changed and it hasn't. Another thing I've tried is listening to the CC on a crappy Baofeng radio, just to see if the signal goes away when this issue happens.

I have not used my G5 in a while, so I charged the unit up and turn it on. Now I get OUT OF RANGE. The display shows Zone 1 MPD/MFD which is normal. The only thing I can think of the unit programing has been corrupted since not using the unit in a while. My Uniden SDS100 is working okay, so I would think no frequencies changes at the base station.

post a link to the system and tell us what site your trying to monitor

WyoLink is the system.

Site 2/4 AKA "Morton Hill" 150.775mhz BEE00 and 1A4 seem to be in check. However, BOTH Unication pagers can only lock onto it for a VERY short time... Both the G-5, and G-2 seem to get confused and will pick up another site that shouldn't even be heard, while a cheap scanner has no trouble at all.

I'm very annoyed! Mostly because I can literally see the site, but it is "out of range"... The G-5 will frequently pick up on the only two 800mhz sites within 50 miles that are literally blocked by the hill that this tower resides on, and the G-2 will pick up on anything else... I've seen the following sites on both screens (sans the two 800mhz sites on the G-2) 2/43, 2/28, 2/5, 2/17, 2/18, 2/22, 2/3, 2/38, and even 2/2 at times!!

Super strong signal on this site for a few minutes, and then NOTHING AT ALL!! This is why I tried P25C in the first place!

P25C works, but it picks up everything that goes through this particular site... I only wish to listen to what I want to hear vs. EVERYTHING!!!

The law enforcement academy is nearby, and everyone "drags" radio traffic in... I don't really care to listen to what is happening 300 miles away, but I do wish to hear whatever is happening in my backyard!!

The problem started back in November, so a lightning strike is not my issue...

Add a P25 Trunking system with just the Morton Hill site info and all the CC frequencies. Then create a knob position for that System (site) only. The pager will not look at anything else but site 2/4. Do not use FF for the site.

Been there, done that, and have the t-shirt!! This is the entire reason why I bought a G-2, and the sole reason for me to even try P25C in the first place!! It has been a struggle!!

It seems that BOTH Unication products just will not work with this site!! All works wonderful for a while, and then, BOTH pagers behave the same, and become "deaf as a post" when I use the specific site info...

Like I've stated before, I'm literally in the shadow of this site as the sun goes down, but I can't hear it reliably on either one...

One question: Why do I need to "add a system" to the ONLY system that is programmed?? Full signal and "out of range" a few minutes later... In and "out of range" has been pretty constant for about SIX MONTHS!! I'll try to add the same system, that is the same as the only one that has been programmed for many years!! Neither one of these are "scanners", but they should be able to decode the same as either RadioShack ones I have...

Another question: Should I create a new system for each site that I want to listen to reliably??

A third question: How do I get P25C to work on P25T?? Yep!! I've resorted to listening to the voice channels, but they have traffic from TG's that I don't wish to hear at all...

Creating a system with one site will only allow it to look for the site you are wanting to monitor. You do not need to do this for every site. Something is wrong either with they system or your programming.
