Partial Shutdown of the Michigan State Police

September 28, 2007

Per Executive Directive 2007-20, the Michigan State Police (MSP) will implement a partial shutdown of operations on October 1, 2007. During the shutdown, the MSP will retain 222 uniform troopers, 15 sergeants, three lieutenants and 27 emergency dispatchers to provide basic law enforcement service on an emergency basis. This represents a 90 percent reduction in MSP staff.

During the shutdown, all MSP work sites will be closed, including posts. MSP specialized services will only be activated if the service is deemed necessary to protect imminent threats to public safety, health and welfare. The following MSP services and activities will cease during the shutdown:

• Forensic science laboratory services
• Commercial vehicle enforcement including weigh stations
• Criminal investigation and drug enforcement operations
• Apprehension of fugitives and parole absconders

• Emergency management and homeland security coordination
• Casino gaming oversight
• Updates to criminal justice information systems
• Tactical, canine, bomb squad, dive and aviation services
• Computer crimes and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force investigations

• Fingerprint-based background checks for employment and licensing purposes

Contact: Shanon Akans, MSP Public Affairs, (517) 336-6364

The ones in RED are SERIOUS SERIOUS issues when closed.

Basically it's a giant F.U. not only to MSP Troopers but also to the citizens of this state. The ones affected most are the ones in areas where there is limited Sheriff Road Patrols.

thats no good! I feel for you guys. I dont know how we would cover the street if we had a 90% reduction in staff. Thats where politicians get you. How long is it expected to last?

Start a petition to impeach the Govenor for refusing to fund public safty for the citizens.
With enough signitures, it can be done.
It worked in California.

That is INSANE! How can they do that?? Close some other things not the Public Safety. I would try to get as many people there to protest as possible. that is just completely not acceptable.

There's nothing else to close since everything connected to the state government will be closing - there is no money without a budget.

Why is this happening?
The state legislature and governor can't agree on a budget for next year (which starts Oct 1). This was our governor's address to the public yesterday. I dunno if she's giving both sides of the story; other Michiganders might be able to provide better links / more information.

I'm hopeful that this is just a scare tactic to goad the public into asking the legistlature to please raise taxes.

I don't have much for the Governor of my state (Rendell, PA) but he hasn't sunk THAT low during the annual end-of-June budget crisis. This year we had a shut down but it was made clear that the Pennsylvania State Police would be totally unaffected.

This is just an absolute outrage. Graham Craker is partialy shutting down the STATE GOVERNMENT...why? Becuase she is a complete failure. Yes a complete failure. Now she is sticking it to the MSP yet again....I just wonder how much more the state police will put up with her before something like impeachment comes up. I would definatly vote to impeach her!!

Also, not that this is enough, this Dingel character wants to raise the GAS TAX for Michigan. Gas is 2.98 here and they want to put a .50 tax hike on top of that......what the hell are these darn democrats thinking???? oh wait.....never mind I see the problem :D

In my city, the GM plant has been gone for many years now, there remains a Powertrain facility. There remains 1 Ford plant. 2 years ago when I bought my house, the ford plant near me went to that holding facility, now it and the other ford plant will close down by 2008, so.....now there is absolutly NOTHING here to keep it all together and thriving....Guess i am going to have to look at moving...

THANKS GRAHAM CRACKER!!!!!!

Yup Dem Vs Rep. I heard Graham on her address say the Rep want to cut spending by laying off hundreds on police. How can she bring that up when she was the one that was goign to fire MSP officers.
If they shut down we need to recall everyone from Graham down.

Every law enforcement officer in the state of Michigian should call in sick. EVERY ONE OF THEM (Campus police, city, county, sheriff's, constables, meter maids -EVERYONE!) during the Ohio State Michigian game to protest the Gov's stupidity!!!!

It's not just MSP getting screwed here...DNR, DOA, DEQ, MDOT, SOS, MVA, and so on...are also shutting down. This isn't targeted at just pubic safety.

While I'm no fan of Granholm either, people need to keep in mind that isn't 100% her fault. The Legislature has had 8 MONTHS to come to an agreement on the budget, and they have failed to do so. They are just as much responsible as the governor. The state constitution is pretty clear in the fact that without a budget in place, state money cannot be spent! The governor isn't shutting down MSP (and others) becuase she wants to, by law SHE HAS TO!

Lets all hope this shutdown is BRIEF, and that our house and senate gets their heads out of their asses and reach an agreement. And pray for the safety of fellow Michiganders while all this is going on.
