PC requirements

I have access to some cheap PCs and need to know what the minimum requirements would be to run a live feed.

I have a good radio and scanner knowledge and mediocre PC knowledge, but can get local help. I don't want to run a feed that requires downloading software to hear the feed and something that is firewall friendly. I was thinking Shoutcast. I have the scanners and Alltel DSL for a couple of local feeds and can make arrangements for a Columbus Fire feed (I'm too far to pick it up on a regular basis).

Here is the email I received on the PCs

The IT department is selling 75 Dell Optiplex GX1 computers and a limited number of monitors. They are capable of running Windows XP but we would recommend running Windows 2000 or earlier (these would be great for running a Unix/Linux OS). PCs can be purchased starting on Monday November 20th thru Friday December 1st; payments must be made via check, payable to x Company, at the time of purchase. Arrangements to pick up your new computer must be made by December 1st. Each computer will be sold for $25; computer and monitor (17 inch CRT) together will be sold for $35. There will be no operating system or any other software included. Everything is sold as is and all sales are final. Information Technology will not support these computers once they are purchased.

All computers come with a keyboard, mouse and power cable
Limit of 3 computers/systems per employee
Computers will be sold only to employees

I would love to hear about this as well. I would like to set up a live feed for the local stuff here in town. I cant find it anywhere else on the net, so some may like to hear it.

I dont want to use my main PC for that, as I would like a second one that can just be set up for that by itself.

I have been testing a live audio and video feed on a PIII 900, 256 meg ram on windows 2000. So far have had no problems.

I've used ShoutCast on a 200MHz P1 with 64MB RAM. I put WinXP on it and it was SLOOOOW but once you got past that and had ShoutCast setup and configured, it worked well.

Im using Windows Media Encoder 9 on an old Gateway E1000. It's something like a 663MHz processor, 128MB of SDRAM and a 7GB HD. It works perfect and I haven't had a problem with it. Oh and it's running XP.
