Listening to my scanner I’m not receiving any traffic over VIPER for Perquimans or Pasquotank counties . Did they switch over to Phase II?

Right now a lot of the traffic on the Winfall site is a mixture of phase 1 and 2. Some of the counties have a bunch of phase 1 radios (Chowan sheriff for example and they are on the Winfall and Valhalla sites), Edenton PD is all phase 2, Chowan EMS is phase 2, and Perquimans Fire is still running VHF patched to VIPER phase 2 with some phase 2 radios already installed and portables being used. So it varies. I monitor the control channel for Winfall frequently, Valhalla almost full-time, and Windsor (Bertie) full-time. I am setup to watch 7 different sites using an outdoor antenna outfitted with 2 inline preamplifiers, and a multi coupler.

Bearcat SDS100. I think it is Phase 2 capable. Do I need to update the software on it?

Sds-100 shouldn't have to change anything if you were receiving Perquimans when VIPER was phase 1 only. Phase 2 uses the same talkgroup information. Also I checked the information from the Winfall controller last night and I still see a lot of phase 1 traffic on the site regardless. Your Sds-100 doesn't care if the site is using phase 1 or 2. It should be receiving. If you aren't, you might want to check your programming, signal strength, and make sure you have the Winfall site programmed. It's only been there several years. It was added due to weak signals from Elizabeth City and Valhalla when Hertford PD (which now doesn't exist) were inside houses etc and they needed a closer tower. You might not have it in your scanner.

What about Winfall PD I remember when it was only two people who were there and one was the chief.

Still like that, they're on the Sheriff's talkgroup. I used to see them by the bridge on 17 sitting in the median. Not in a long time, but I only go over the bridge every few weeks. They are only on duty sporadically from what I have been told. The county Sheriff is basically all the law enforcement you'll be listening to. FD and EMS also will be active listening to VIPER.

Thank you Sir. Not sure why I was not receiving any radio traffic for a few days. I do have all those sites programmed into my scanner. Just updated the firmware via Sentinel and I am starting to receive traffic again. Very strange. Thank you for all of you information though. Background info I did not know.

Bearcat SDS100.
Try using the Wide Invert filter on the Perquimans County site of VIPER. I often have good results using that filter on sites with 700 MHz frequencies. If you export and attach your favorites list file, we can take a look at it to check for errors.
