I apologize to all for overstepping. However I still believe that we need to be more careful about putting such information anywhere that it could cause us problems.

Bye

Posting a KeyID does absolutely nothing to cause problems. It can be easily decoded with freely available tools such as DSD Plus. If you know that "Anytown PD" uses KeyID of 55, that does nothing to assist anyone to decrypt their key. You would need the actual key value to pose a security risk.

IMHO, information that is transmitted "in the clear" such as Radio ID, Talkgroup ID, Key ID, etc... is free game to post as there is no risk. There are ways this data can be encrypted so if an agency truly desires that data to be protected, it is possible should they wish. If that were to happen, it would be just as secure as encrypted voice.

Like any ENCRYPTION (There I said it!) topic, it's going to stir up the feels.

Big cheese spoke, but I can appreciate two things about this:

1. You apologized for overstepping. Being able to apologize is something that many are unable or unwilling to do.
2. While many will disagree, your intentions are absolutely in the right place.

I agree with others, the Key ID probably isn't putting anything at risk. But, like you, I'm really careful about what info I choose to share, even if it seems harmless. This is a hobby that many enjoy, and being careful about what information gets shared is necessary to protect it. Accidentally sharing the wrong information can put the hobby at risk. I've shared things in the past that I later wish I hadn't. There are those that will misuse information for their own gain. I know for a fact that there are people that have used this webpage to pull repeater input frequencies and tones to transmit on systems they should not be on. That has directly lead to agencies moving to encrypt. It's lead to me encrypting some of our work systems.

Are you talking about the Key ID information? I see it on DSD+, and I think someone may have submitted it once. It may have been entered in the wiki.

I assume having the KeyID actually does the general public no good, as much as it does for any educated scanner listener. (So there is need to post it anywhere)

From research, it also appears you can't do anything with it. It's just a directory for lookup on an encrypted ID.

It also in another wiki article, seems to have been there for 13 years.
ah good so it would be archived in multiple other websites as well anyways.

i figure that it is like that big named guy who had a data splitter and then got a visit from the FBI.
best to stay safe.

Bill Cheek wasn't it? IIRC he published info about how to decode MDTs and law enforcement didn't appreciate it.

At 1 point in my life I worked at and later owned an electronic repair shop. local law enforcement went to using the old voice inversion so the town would not hear about the cigarette runs and food runs done on shifts. This was before the days of affordable cell phones or places that could receive service. Anyway people found out I was adding the little black boxes to scanners. 3 wires and a 9 volt made some good $$ back then. I had Bill Cheek books, along with some other publications showing how to enable scanners to receive those cell phone calls as that service began to blossom. The local cops got upset with me for hooking those little devices to hear their transmissions but when they found out I could get them cell communications for them to listen in on, I was working 18 hour days just to keep up. Finally had to hang it up after some of the big dogs got wind of my talents but I was smart enough to keep old floppy disk of every judge, doctor, lawyer and cop that paid for that service along with serial numbers of the modified equipment. Don't get me started on FTA receivers, smart cards and old C band modules. Those were the days of wine women and song.

It's definitely a love/hate relationship. I love that we can use it and talk freely, but I hate that I can't listen to others lol.
