I reside in Pinellas County Florida and am looking for a rechargeable handheld scanner that can pick up Pinellas County Sheriff, St. Petersburg Police, EMS/Fire, NOAA, etc.. I am not worried about cost, as I have been looking at Uniden BCD436HP. However, I was hoping to tap your folks expertise to determine if this is a recommended and favorable scanner for Emergency / BOB SHTF scenarios and if it will be able to pick up what I need in order to listen to local and even nationwide activity. Needs to definitely pick up local Sherriff and Police. I am a newbie when it comes to scanners other than my IPAD scanner apps. With Florida using Florida Wide NXDN Network, will I need to select another device? Thank you very much in advance for your willingness in assisting my query. May God Bless!

The 436hp will work in your area. The FL Wide NXDN Network you'll need DSDPlus and dongles and a computer.

Hello and welcome to RR. The 436 is an excellent handheld scanner which in my opinion makes it more flexible than a base/mobile unit. This radio will do everything it sounds like you want it to do, except the NXDN network, which you may be able to receive using the DSD plus software, available for free on this website (search for dsdplus in the search box top right corner for the link.) Are you referring to the Florida Highway Patrol, Fish and Wildlife, etc. with your reference of "With Florida using Florida Wide NXDN Network?" If so they are not using that but this system Statewide Law Enforcement Radio System Trunking System, Statewide, Florida - Scanner Frequencies, which is un-monitorable by any scanner due to encryption. Listening to your target agencies in Pinellas would mean monitoring the county P 25 network Pinellas County Public Services (Project 25) Trunking System, Pinellas County, Florida - Scanner Frequencies, and also the Clearwater city system, Clearwater City Services Trunking System, Clearwater, Florida - Scanner Frequencies, which while being a phase 2 system is within the capabilities of this particular scanner. If you pull the trigger on this unit I believe it will fit your bill. Enjoy!
