My husband and I are just getting started with our new scanner. We are enjoying listening to the city of Salem Police Department and Fire/Rescue. They use codes to communicate, how could we get a copy of the codes so we will understand what they’re referring to?

Check the WIKI here on RR. Goto WIKI home, type in 10 codes. There are slight variations between departments but there are 10 codes here to view. Last depending on the police department, they might have a listing they will give out. Stop by and ask the departmnt.

See about a used copy of Scanner Master directory on Ebay. See if somebody from your local media has the codes or ask an elected official if you are close enough to them...

Listening to the codes over time, in the context that they are being used, can also tip you off to what they mean. That's how I learned a lot of codes. For example, if you hear about a "10-50" involving two vehicles, that can tell you that the department is using 10-50 as the code for an auto accident. Or if you notice a few minutes after officers are dispatched to a call they say "I'm 10-24", eventually you realize that means they are at the location of the call.

Good advice! Taking notes while listening will help a great deal with this.
