The Portland Office of Emergency Management partnering with the Bureau of Emergency Communications, the Portland Water Bureau, Portland Fire & Rescue, Multnomah County Emergency Management, and Multnomah County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) will conduct an Amateur Radio Training and Tour for current FCC licensed Ham Radio Operators on Saturday, September 18, 2010 from 9 AM to 4 PM.
The training focuses on Hams that serve Multnomah County including volunteers from ARES and Portland's Neighborhood Emergency Teams (NET).
"Being a part of Portland's Amateur Radio Operators network is an important and incredibly unique way to contribute to your City," said Portland Mayor Sam Adams. "I encourage any and all Portlanders with experience and interest in this area to consider becoming part of Portland's broader public safety and awareness efforts."
Carmen Merlo, Director of the Portland Office of Emergency Management states, "We depend on Amateur Radio Operators for any disaster that affects our ability to communicate—they provide an invaluable service to the city and its citizens."
The amateur radio deployment tour will familiarize participants with locations and equipment that may be utilized in an incident/emergency that disrupts communications in Multnomah County. Some of the equipment that will be displayed includes:
City of Portland Communications Go Kit -a portable, sophisticated communications system that includes satelliInternetnet, telephone and fax, commercial VHF and 800 MHz radio as well as HAM radio. The kit can sustain itself on battery power for up to three days and has a generator that can be used if needed.
City of Portland Water Bureau Command and Communications Trailer - a self-contained mobile unit that is used to respond to water incidents. The trailer contains the resources needed to support field response and communications staff.
Portland Fire Bureau's Amateur Radio Kits -located in each of the 30 PF&R stations that when set-up by Neighborhood Emergency Team volunteers, including a licensed Ham operator, enables the flow of critical information from Portland's neighborhoods to the City's Emergency Coordination Center (ECC).
