Huub,

Nice job on the interception of that report. IT was nice of you to share it with us. BTW, I love the topic title - it gave me a good chuckle :)

Hi,

AF1, SAM 29000 and SKIP 45 (E-4B) just passed NW-Europe and heading CONUS, working 05649.0 with GANDER.

SKIP 45 was heading LAGAS > CZQX

Who is callsign Gander? Also what callsign was AF1 using while in flight, what is just SAM 29000?

Gander is the first airport/airspace in northeastern North America. They handle trans-Atlantic crossings on HF as well.

SAM 29000 is likely the backup AF1 craft.. IIRC, they are SAM 28000 and 29000 when the president isn't aboard, and when he is, they become Air Force One. Or whatever aircraft has him aboard.. if you take him up in your private Cessna, you're Air Force One. :)

Very true about whatever aircraft he is on, but I thought they used a different callsign than Air Force 1 when in different countries, no?

You are correct on the SAM part, but on the private plane it would be Executive One. The call sign SAM is short for "Special Air Mission" for those that didnt know.

Very rare, but you might be thinking of the Thanksgiving trip a few years ago where a British Air pilot thought he saw AF1 in a distance but heard the callsign Gulfstream xxx.

No I just thought that when AF1 was in another country they would use a different call sign other that AF1. I thought they used SAM 29000 or something.

The same applies for the presidential helo. When he is on-board, it's Marine-1. When he is not on-board, the pilot uses the last 3 charactors of it's normal registration #, for example 29-Sierra.

An aircraft carrying the president becomes [military service operating the aircraft] 1. In the case of a non-military aircraft, someone already pointed out the Executive 1 callsign.

Overseas, they just prepend the words "United States" or "U.S." to the callsign.

I thought that any aircraft with the US President is on is called Air Force 1 and when he is not it is called SAM 29000 or other designated callsigns. The Same thing applies with AF 2 and the VP.

At Least that's what I was lead to believe.

By me saying this "Hopfully the Secret Service won't be seeing tonight ...LOL

catch ya later.

Thanks. That answers my question about overseas.

KC0STG, it's only fair to say hello to the Carnivore and Echelon systems checking in once you say that. ;)

Is any civilian aircraft with POTUS (although not very likely) still called Executive 1?

Yes. If the president decides to take a flight on Southwest Airlines, the aircraft is allowed to use the callsign "Executive One".

This has only been done once with Nixon where he took a United flight as a publicity stunt.
