• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

XTL/XTS5000 Power Issues

I own a XTL 5000 and had my firmware upgraded recently from R07, to R20. When I power down the radio for a long time and try to turn it on, the W7 head does not display. When I took the power source out, held the power button on the radio, and plugged in the power source, the W7 head display works again.

The problem I’m having is if my radio sits too long with it turned off with active power, and I try to turn it on, it won’t turn on. It will only turn on when both the power button and power source turn on simultaneously or about the same time.

Any idea why this may be the case?

That is a rather odd event. Check your power connections to the head. The black should go to the brick ground with the brick B- minus power cable.
Both orage and green with the B+ should go to your PSU.
Check your voltage and current at the supply.
XTLs don't like poor grounds or power fluxuations.

I think I tried doing that. I unplugged and plugged the head back in and the issue still persists. I check my power, and it is running the same.

Although when I serviced it myself, I removed the head while power was going through. I then plugged the head back in, but it didn’t want to power on. I had to turn off the power source, hold the power button, and plug the power source back in,

Hmm, OK, I'm just a lowly ol' dummy that knows nothing so I "RTFIM" once, maybe twice, and Motorola said "Do Not Connect the Ground Directly To The Battery" in their installation manual. I just follow the instructions and I have way more than one XTL mobile that I haven't had any issues so far.

I have figured out the issue. The cable that plugs into the back of the XTL5000 is not wired correctly. When I got my serial programming cable instead of using paper clips, it had no ignition sense on it, and was missing other wiring. When I used my friend’s accessory cable, it powered up just fine.

It had nothing to do with the software or the control head. It was the cable that gives issues. I can’t turn off the ignition sense because the W series control heads did not allow it.
