Here is something to ponder... a little bigger picture. Not sure how much of this represents the real-life configuration, as it is just from FCC records:

Next time I'm in Kingwood with the radio in the truck I'll poke around a bit. The SO is downtown, so anywhere I go in Kingwood I should be able to pick it up (small town).

Ok, I sat around yesterday just outside of downtown. None of those VHF inputs are in use for the SO. I just did my fiancee's taxes and will be doing mine when my W2's get here, and she's agreed to let me get a new radio for the truck (as well as a flat screen TV for the apartment! Woo!). It has slightly better RX than the handheld I have now, so it should be interesting to see what I can pull up. My HT will stay inside and be hooked to the discone. I'm going to ask our landlord if I can put it outside on a roof-mounted tripod for better receive. Since he's a ham as well, I'm hoping he'll say ok.

Here, there and everywhere in WV
We appeciate the effort Brown Leopard..There has to be a input freq to 156.2325, just like the other VHF high rebroadcast pair...I surmise its a East, West, North and South tower setup...A rebroadcast of the lowband or the like..156.2325 is far too active and comes in Lima Charlie here in the Clarksburg area.

This makes me think we are missing the mobile input freq and Mtindor and myself are hearing the broadcast 156.2325 output from the repeater. It's out there somewhere on the 154-159 band...We just gotta find it...

I'm almost wondering if there is maybe a voter system in place. Possibly with a UHF link or something. When I worked for a radio service in Ohio, we used voters alot of mobiles and used a link for them.

Updated the Wiki page for Preston with some more fire station numbers. Still working on the inputs. With the weather bad, I've been out pulling more cars out of snow than listening to the radio, however.

Major update!

After speaking with the Police Chief of our town last night, he confirmed a few things about the radio systems here in Preston Co.

All low band radio gear is out of service. There is no repeater for 39 mhz any longer (it came down in an accident when they were setting up another tower).

All radio communications in Preston Co. are on VHF frequencies only as of about 2 years ago. There are no mobile repeaters in use except in Albright. The Kenwood radios that PCSO, Terra Alta, Reedsville, Masontown and Bruceton use do not have mrpt capabilities.

This also includes all fire departments/EMS. There is no repeater system for the 45-46 mhz system, so they are all on the shared statewide Fire frequency in VHF.

I'm with ^^^^ . Thanks Brown. You're a great radio sleuth.

Just so I understand, the 39 mhz police and 45 Mhz fire frequencies need to be removed from the RRDB now... do you guys concur?

Correct, Mike. They are just waiting for the license to expire and it is not in use any longer.

Excellent. Low-band police/fire have been removed. A few callsigns have been updated for some freqs to match the most current licensing.

Wow, that's pretty barren now. There has to be more than that to listen to in Preston rofl.

Actually, the sheriff dispatches the local L/E out, EMS/Fire are dispatched on one channel. Small county, small towns.

Plus there is probably a lot of stuff to actually monitor if one does a search... closeby counties, WVIRP, business radio, snow plows/road crews. Just the DB page looks bare. Of course that sure is handy since it takes a very minimal scanner to effectively scan all the public safety in Preston county. You can do it for just a few shekels, rather than dropping 500 bones on a scanner.

159.2175 PL 103.5 was active a few times this evening. Caught in on search. It was weak. Given I do hear Preston Co frequencies occasionally, this may be the Preston SO or something on this freq (Preston Co does have a license for this freq).

The other possibility is that it is Wayne Co SO in Northern Ohio (which is also licensed on htis freq).

But I would appreciate if you guys monitoring Preston would enter 159.2175 PL 103.5 in your scanners and let us know what you find.

Thanks

Mike

Sure thing. I have my amateur radio in the truck for the time being (I help extract vehicles from the snow) but when I get in it I will add this freq. Any idea who is using it? Did you hear any unit numbers?

Unfortunately, I couldn't make anything useful out. Signal was strong enough to consistently break the PL thaht was set in my scanner, but the audio wasn't very high and thre was a lot of local VHF activity that affected my ability to listen to this weak signal at the time.

I'll listen some more today and see if I can't hear anything.

Thanks

Oh! An update I forgot to post about yesterday:

154.2875 is the PCFD Central repeater's input.

You're sayingg that 154.2875 is the input for 154.1525?

You have to admit that would seem odd for the following reasons:

1. License info indicates one of two frequencies, 151.4825 or 153.9275
2. 154.2875 - 154.1525 = 135 khz

You don't typically see a repeater with input and output that close. Sure you can, but it isn't typical.

I'm certainly not doubting that you are hearing the same thing on 154.1525 and 154.2875. Rather, I suspect that one is maybe a simulcast of other's traffic.

With that said, the license may be only loosely followed. I have seen so many counties that don't use the frequencies that are licensed to them, or that use them in a different configuration. I've often seen counties use a different input than what is listed on the license.

So i don't know what to do with this in the DB at this time. if you guys want to suggest how it should be labeled I can add it as a separate entry. But I'm really not inclined to actually add it as an input to the 154.1525 listing at this time.

Where you hearing all transmissions on 154.2875 with the same signal strength?

Think about it and let me know how you guys think it should be listed in the DB.

Thanks

Mike

Actually, I thought I was hearing the same thing, however, I had my narrow filter on, and since I was sitting near the fire truck and rescue truck (accident I was helping clear up), I heard them perfectly, but not any other unit. I had that freq. programmed in from the FCC info, so it wasn't a random scan pickup.
