If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey group when programming the Unication G5 for the Lynchburg Virginia area what is the advantage of using Priority vs Non - Priority when programming the talk groups?

What you put in Priority will override any Talkgroup/frequency that is in the Non Priority. When the Priority becomes active!
i.e. if a non-priority Talkgroup is active and a priority Talkgroup becomes active it overrides the non-priority Talkgroup.
What you put into Priority will be up to your listening interests.
I program my Fire/EMS as Priority.
Hope this helps out.

That’s the way I was thinking it would be but wanted to make sure. Thank you for the reply.

The potentially bad part is that if you temporarily block a priority talkgroup, it will still override non-priority talkgroups, even if it's the non-priority talkgroups that you are wanting to hear.

I believe this is also system dependent meaning that the system needs to also have that TG as a priority as well. I have never been able to get this to work for me. My local dispatches both fire and medics on separate TGs but at the same time (think multi select on the dispatch console) and it’s a crap shoot as to which the G4 will pick up first even with fire set as priority. My only fix was to remove the medic TG to get the fire to always alert.

The order they are entered into the list plays a role in the pecking order as well.

Does this hold true if everything is entered in "non-priority" also? I have everything in "non-priority" and I've noticed a few times one talk group will simply come in one another one already in use during some transmissions. I was told it didn't make a difference what order they were in but now I wonder...

The non-priority list all carry equal weight, otherwise there'd be no point in having two lists - you'd just keep adding to the end of one big priority list.

Ok, thanks. I guess I'm not sure why I'm hearing what I'm hearing then at times. I'll look further into it. 73

No, you can enter any talkgroup into the priority list the pager will switch to that group when active. It may or not be good for your monitoring habits, since you kind miss some traffic on the other groups at times.

I have many scanners and both a G4/G5, so it gets busy when out and about one can scan the fire divisional groups while the other just monitors the fire dispatch. Really only use the G4/G5 when out with have othe monitoring stuff at home.

I have always entered my fire dispatch talkgroups when entering the full talkgroups for fire in as priority.

Sometimes I would like to try it the other way with fire dispatch just in the regular list, but always come back to this approach.

It shouldn't interrupt an ongoing transmission like it does when programmed as priority, but if two non-priority TG's begin at the same time, it will tend to favor the TG that's higher up the list.

And that's likely exactly what I have happening. I get the first second or so, and it's obvious they're not done, but it goes on to something else. I'll have to look at my PPS and see what order I have things in to see if this might be the case. Thanks.
