I just bought a new PRO 651 and the battery charge circuit is not working. Of course it is non returnable due to the liquidation going on at Radio Shack.

I have the battery type set Nimh and it refuses to charge. I measured the current draw and it only draws 14ma when the battery pack is inserted with the yellow battery holder. It makes no difference if the charger is disabled or what battery type I choose. External power works normally and it does show a blinking icon that it is charging.

I measure 10 volts across the contacts with no battery pack inserted, but it drops to the battery terminal voltage when the pack is inserted. I opened the unit up and it appears as though the ground side of the charge circuit is controlled by a SMD NPN transistor. But without a good schematic I am lost.

What makes you think its non-returnable? Most Radio Shacks round here are still operating normally and I would assume defective products are still returnable or covered under the warranty.

Also, after seeing horror stories on here about batteries overheating and damaging scanners when being charged, I charge my batteries outside the scanner.

I went back to the Radio Shack store and they pointed to a sign that stated all sales are final. The manager did tell me if he had a another one he would swap it, but he did not have a another unit.

I tried another store that did have three in stock and he told me the stores are owned by the liquidation company and they could not give me another unit.

I have been using a external charger, but I would like to have the option of using the internal charger if needed.

Doubt you will find any schematic for any newer radio, I believe the FCC does not allow them for public use. What is your charge time set to in the radio?

There is nothing wrong with your scanner. Whistler had to change the charging circuit to comply with new CA laws. This limited the available charging current to the batteries. What you measured is about it for a charge current. Its best to use an external charger.

The PRO-106 charged the batteries normally with 150ma of charge current and I guess the change was made when Whistler took over. I was hoping to find a schematic and see what was changed. I am sure it must be something simple like a resistor change somewhere in the charge circuit to limit the current.

The PRO-106 should be the same, so I was hoping to find a drawing on it . I can't remember the exact charge time, but I think its like 24 hours or so.

Default charge time for the 651 should be set at 99.

My 651 shows 12.4 ma charging. I believe to charge 2400mah batteries at 12.4ma would take about 240 hours.

I have left my 651 charge for 4 days then took the batteries out and put them into my Opus charger and it showed about 1400mah.

Charger works just very slowly.

If you like the scanner do NOT charge NiMh cells internally! As mentioned its Strongly advised to always use a external charger. Always! 73, n9zas
