I already have a Pro-96 and I want to pick up another scanner at a lesser cost. My main concern is that I can listen to the Suffolk County NY Police Department, I think I should be able to with any of these, can anyone else suggest which to buy?

I have both the Pro-528 and the Pro-162. I had the Pro-164 for one day. It all depends on do you need Tex-Tags and Tones. I was in the same boat as you, wanted a scanner to listen to my local police. On my pro-162 I have two counties and all area public saftey all texed and with tones set. Now for my local Police they run off a LTR system with just three ID's. They also use the State Police frequencies, which is only another seven frequencies. I don't need tags and tones for my local police I know them just by listening. So the pro-528 is a perfect scanner for my local use. It's a good little scanner without allot of bells and whistles and is allot cheaper than the 162. The pro-162 is great for me also because I have allot of things programmed into it, which I do need to have texed and tones set. As for the pro-164 to me it was junk, I didn't like it at all for reasons I stated in a couple of other threads. So I guess it boils down to is how deep are your pockets...........Ray

I don't know if they use them either. But that is an easy fix, ask in the New York State forum or look it up in the database here. Tex-Tag is when you put a name to a frequency. Example-your scanner LCD shows 156.150 and under the frequency it says Walden Police with say a number like this 131.8 which is the P/L and it stands for private line. P/L's are used so more then one agency can use the same frequency without stepping on each other.

No sure if I need Tex-Tags and Tones.... As I'm not sure what they are or if my PD uses them :(

Text tags, you set up those. Instead of 155.3700 you put in point to point
Or police car to car or fire dispatch.

The tones is PL or DPL and they cut down on interference and other users that might be on the same channel.

I would say yes to the 164 or 162 or 163. The 528 is not bad, but the others are much better in function.

I got a Pro-97 and 162, and I love the 162 over any scanner i have used this far.

I recently picked up a Pro-162 and liked it so much that I sold my Icom R5 to another RR member here on the forums. The 162 is a great scanner for the price.

Looks like I picked a lousy time to buy my Pro-96, it is down to $379.99. I figured if I bought another digital I would go to the GRE PSR 500 but at that price I may just buy another Pro-96 instead of the Pro-162 @ $219, which it sounds like I need...

There is that banging your head against the brick wall icon when you need it?
