PRO-651 and PRO-652 CPU Update 2.9 Released

Well that's some good data starting to develop. 3 different scanners with firmware update issues (oilmillcharlie, Benzman66 and sallen07) all with date code 07A14.

It's also interesting to note that 2 of the 3 problem scanners have their serial number blank. I wonder if that has something to do with Radio Shack selling these scanners off during the liquidation sale?

If you don't mind sharing, what is the date code of the scanner that will not update to 2.9? Also does it have a serial number or is it blank as others have reported?

Apologize for the late response, been away. My scanner too has the date code of 0714 and the serial number has rubbed off, it was there when I purchased it. I was informed too late to place a piece of tape over it to save it, which I did with my other one, which is date code 0914 and updated with no issue but it had 2.8 to begin with.

Appears at least 4 of us are hooped with the 2.6 version. I still can't wrap my head around why it won't update, all were doing is updating software and if there needs to be another update for the 2.6 so be it, release it as there are many of them out there.

What computer operating system did you use to update your two version 2.6 PRO-652's to version 2.9?

I'm wondering if the "unable to communicate with the scanner" issues that some are reporting are being caused by the multiple combinations of different computer operating systems, different drivers for the scanner programming cable and different versions of the scanner programming cable itself. (Radio Shack had an older version 20-047 scanner programming cable which was replaced by a newer version 20-546. Both are "supposed to be" functionally equivalent.)

I didn't change the ex exe I left it as is ex it went on the pcu update went on right way no glicks at all

It's been about a month and a half since Radio Shack posted the CPU firmware update version 2.9 for the PRO-651/PRO-652 on the PRO-651's webpage (https://www.radioshack.com/products/radioshack-pro-651-handheld-radio-scanner?variant=5717071749). I FOUND a solution

Nothing like dredging up a 2+ year old thread, eh?

BUT ... I finally got the guts to try something I was tempted to do in early June of 2016.

See, I really liked my Pro-651. I liked it so much that after I bricked it I bought a WS1040 to replace it.

So my thought was, "Run the Radio Shack updater with the WS1040 hooked up. Hit the "Test" button and it will find it. Swap the WS1040 and Pro-651 and hit "Update".

I never tried it though; I was really worried that I would brick ANOTHER scanner.

Until tonight. Tried to upgrade the Pro-651. Got the flashing/beeping/can't talk to scanner.

So I hooked up the WS1040 and ran the Radio Shack updater again. I got a message saying (to paraphrase) "This is for 2.9, and you're running 2.9". Swapped the two scanners, hit "OK" and the "Update" button was active (not greyed out).

I hit the button, and my Pro-651 said "updating" and I got the progress bar on my PC. Waited a bit ...


... and it WORKED. I'm listening to my Pro-651 (with all the scan lists from 2016) as I type.

So if you have a bricked Pro-651, see if you can find someone who has a good one, or a good WS1040, and give it a try

I just got a bricked pro 652 from ebay on last weeks 15% off coupon for $140. Not a scratch on it, even had the plastic protector on the screen. It was stuck on the waiting for pc/if update screen at version 1.5 Updated it 2.9 with out a problem and downloaded my programming file and it is scanning like new. I do like a bargain. Anyone know the firmware history. 1.5 seems old. My other 652 has been on version 2.9 since it was released.

Hello,

2.9 is the App Version, not the Bootloader. The App was erased in the picture you posted. That is why it stays in CPU SW Upgrade mode.

Ok, someone else bricked it and I got it for a fair price. I took a chance the it would update and won. The date code is 05a14, so i guess it's a 2014. It's like new so must have been out of service for a while. Been listening for a couple of hours and it's working perfectly. Thanks.

If you read through this thread from the beginning, you will read that some of the earlier versions shipped from the factory with CPU firmware 2.6 while later versions shipped with CPU firmware 2.8. It is believed that the reason 2.6 was updated to 2.8 in later production runs was to accommodate some hardware change(s) that had been made to the scanner. CPU firmware 2.9 is the only CPU firmware update that was ever released publicly for the PRO-651/PRO-652.

Hi, I have a couple questions regarding downloading the firmware update posted by TRP2525
I have windows 10, I renamed the file to .exe at the end but the file type in properties is still EX
and it saved it as an internet explorer file, what do I save it as? What program do I open with?

Got the cpu firmware update to work

I decided to try the update from trp2525 with another computer which has Windows 7 and it let me change the EX to EXE the first time. Something was not letting me do it in Windows 10. However it did not fix the problem and my PRO652 still displays 4 rows of squares and won't work so I bit the bullet and sent it to G&G Communications and if he can fix it, it will cost $65.00.

Those freq. all show DMR. The 651 will not do DMR. You will need a different scanner.
