Are the battery contacts making contact? I found with many older handheld scanners, after a while you may need to take a small screwdriver or something and gently pry the battery contacts back outward into their proper position because they lose their “springiness” over time.
Are the battery contacts perhaps corroded?
When was the last time the scanner worked?
