I was wondering what might be a good alternative scanner that is comparable to a RadioShack Pro 97. I'm trying to stay between 100-200$ USD. Suggestions?

The PRO-528 might make a good alternative. Compared to the 97, it has no text tagging, or PL/DPL tone capability.

Are you trying to avoid the Pro-97?

If so the BC246T is a decent scanner (pro-97 is better than the 246 in my opinion). One of the best handhelds I have owned was the BR330T (although it is a little higher at $250)

But for $150 the Pro-97 is an awesome scanner.

I'm not trying to avoid the Pro 97, I'm just curious as to my options. I'll probably end up going with it because it seems to be the popular thing to do :p

I can also get a discount at RS (on top of the sale price at that) but if I can something comparable to it for cheaper...then hey, I'm all for it.

If you get the employee discount, than it'll be $105. Pretty hard to beat that. I own a 97 and a 246t, and there are only a couple small things that I think the 246t is better, but there are a lot of bigger things that the 97 does and the 246t does not. That's not including any price difference, just a head to head showdown.

Pro-97

I'd also recommend the PRO-97.
The audio on the 97 is great and it works very well on all trunking systems. (except digital of course...)
I played with the Uniden 246 for a bit but the audio was very weak.
The 97 is a great deal when their on sale....

You might can find a Pro-95 on ebay for less than $100.

He's already getting a discount for the 97, so it would not be much more $$$ for a vastly superior scanner.

I have a PRO-97 and if I could pick up another brand new one for only $105, I might break my rule against buying any more non-digital scanners.

well...as soon as they go on sale again I think I just might have to pick one up. As a side note, I wonder what kind of money I could make buying them on sale, with discount, and reselling :p

Aside from loosing your job or the job of whoever is "helping" you get the discount? People have been fired for that, at RS and many other retail companies.

I asked my manager about it, he didn't think it would be a problem. Even on sale, with an employee discount, he STILL makes profit. I dunno, it's just a thought. I've seen one guy selling RS scanners (20-515) on ebay for 99.99. They retail in the store for 79.97.

It is a problem, and more than likely you will get caught if you buy a large number of them.

There is a reason the maky you enter your ss# when you make a purchase with the discount, and if you look at the paperwork you signed when you were hired you will see that you would get fired if caught.

Your manager is still making a profit yes, but you are diluting the market value of the scanner.
