gmclam said:I met with Scott (earnan) and checked out his scanner visually. The audio section of the scanner works fine. The CPU is not detecting a signal present. I looked at the schematic myself, and while there are a lot of things it could be, I would agree with n2mdk that the SQUELCH pot is the most likely culprit. I sure do wish for many reasons that GRE did not use this stupid stacked dual pot on this model. I guess all I can hope is that they do not use this type of pot on their own branded models.
The volume pot is 50K with a switch. The squelch pot is 10K. I don't have an exact part number available, nor do I know if this is an "orderable" part from RS.
Edit: Here is some info from the PRO97 Yahoo Group:
They are made by an obscure Taiwan company called Hung Ta Enterprises,
part number RG82BS-2A1. See http://www.hung-ta.com.tw/03-list-02.htm#.
Mouser does not carry them and the only place I know of is Radio Shack.
Their part number is 12429163. Note that it is a dual control - you
will be buying the volume pot, squelch pot and on/off switch in one
assembly. The price should be just under $16.
Here are some pics for replacing the part:

Good luck Scott.
Nice to meet you.
If you can find a part, I'll be happy to replace the old one for you.

I just have to admire all you "armchair quarterbacks" out there.JESSERABBIT said:Broken, loose speaker wire? Foreign object in external speaker jack?
Wow, that's a very presumptive statement. There are quite a few of us here on RR very capable of fixing these things. Some of us might even do a better job of building them in the first place.W4kRR said:It sure sounds like you got a defective scanner, and if that's the case, it doesn't make much difference what's wrong with it, because it isn't likely you will be able to repair it yourself anyway.
Again short sighted. Sources show a replacement pot costs under $17. I am willing to change it out for free for him. Also, he just happens to work at an electronics store (no NOT RS) and he just might be able to find a replacement; perhaps even better quality or at a lower price. You've got two choices: Send it back to Radio Shack for repair, and get back a working scanner, or try to get a refund from the eBay seller. I would opt for the first option.

The speaker works fine. When you press a button you hear the beep. That also means the amplifier works. Keep in mind the scanner only scans, and never stops. If a signal is ever received, the CPU does not know it and keeps on scanning.
