Hello I was a retard and bought this pro 97. My situation is it scans all the frequincies but stops on none. i have the squelch all the way down and the antenna is installed correctly. Is this just a dud scanner or can it be fixed? I've tried setting it to factory settings.

Are you able to receive any of the weather channels?

You have to adjust the squelch just to the point where you here noise all the time ,then back
off till the noise goes away.this set your threashold point, the way you have it now it won't work.Read page 28 of the manual

ok but what if signal stalker is not working at all either. like i said before it scans all frequincies but does NOT stop. squelch is all the way down and no sound comes from it except for the beeps of the buttons. i have read the manual several times it wont even pick up the "birdie signals" it talks about.

And your no retard. It's called a learning curve. You have a great radio. We must determine if you have the proper radio to recieve your listening interests. Hundreds of like minded persons know the answer for you. Be as specific as possible what you need or want.

From database info, set bank and all individual frequencies to MO. Enter the control (all) frequencies, when you hear traffic push the "T" button to save the talk group. The 97 will not cover all (meaning digital) in this area. Don Starr's software and the Radio Shack USB download cable makes alpha text programming a breeze. RR donation is a bargain. Allows import and download directly to unit. Read, read and read this site. Most questions have already been asked and answered. Use your search function. Oh, and read RR daily. It's the only way to keep current.

They are on a Motorola trunked system. You will not pick them up via "factory settings". You will either need to enter the frequencies and talkgroups manually, or download a program such as WIN97 to do it. With WIN97 you will also need a special cable to connect the scanner to the computer.

I am in Fair Oaks and monitor all you've listed 24/7. I can either send you a list of what you'll exactly need to enter, or a file if you use WIN97. It takes some time and patience to program the scanner for this type of system.

To make things more complicated; Sacramento County has two sets of frequencies; one referred to as "site 1" and one referred to as "site 2". Site 1 is in the city and site 2 is near hwy 50 and El Dorado Hills. So, depending on where you are, one set of frequencies will work better than the other. In addition, some stuff is only on one site.

I have both sites programmed, but am closer to site 2. If you program the following frequencies into a dedicated bank, set the bank to MO and OPEN, you will hear everything going on. You'll find it is too much with RT and public works stuff. That's why the talkgroups should also be programmed. That's a lot to go into here.

Site 2:
868.437500
868.537500
868.737500
868.937500
868.962500

There are also some VHF freqs used by local fire departments. For CHP you'll need GOLD, GREEN & BLACK base and mobile frequencies.

The thing that bothers me is that you say you have the squelch all the way open and the radio doesn't stop on conventional frequencies and you get no sound. If this is the case then something is definitely wrong. Even with no carrier/signal the open squelch should give you sound/noise.

As mentioned above, if you open the squelch, the radio should stop and you should hear noise. Also the WX band should be active and stop on a frequency when you select it. You may want to go back to the Radio Shack and compare it to another. That is if you got it at Radio Shack?

You should have the squelch knob turned fully COUNTER-CLOCKWISE to hear "everything". If you have the knob turned fully clockwise, you'll only hear something when it is at your door (and powerful enough)

Broken PRO-97

If the scanner was programmed correctly, and in SCAN mode, when a conversation is happening, you will see the channel stop on the display. There is also a "lightning bolt" icon on the display that indicates whether or not the CPU inside the scanner thinks there is a signal. With the squelch fully ccw, the lightning bolt should be illuminated.

If indeed the display is showing what is happening, and you are just not getting any audio, the problem is actually something "simple". It could be a defective volume control (common), bad speaker, bad earphone jack or something like that.

When pressing buttons to program it, do you hear a "beep"? If so that rules out the spreaker problems and points me to a bad volume control. If you don't hear any beeps, you might try plugging in a headset.

I will send you a PM.

Beginning to appear bleak earnan. You are where you started. They are good receivers. I have 2. XYL commandeered the first. On sale again next flier I think I read. 149.00. Good luck. Maybe you can find a tech hobbiest for a look see.
