I have purchased the RS 20-546 USB cable recommended on Don Starr's website and installed the cable drivers on my Win7 laptop with no problems. I reset the ComPort in the Win95 software and tried various combinations on checking/unchecking communication configuration options but cannot get the data read from the scanner. It says it times out waiting on header information.

Any and all thoughts or suggestions appreciated in advance as I really don't want to hand enter new program info.

Are you using the pigtail? If so, disconnect it - you don't need it, according to our handy chart in the wiki...

What does the Windows Device Manager show you?

That the cable is assigned to Com4 and is working properly, i.e. no exclamation point in a yellow triangle. What other indications should there be? How would I find these indications? Would a right click -> Properties have other info I need?

In the COM port properties try adjusting the data transfer speeds. If it is currently on AUTO, change setting to 19200. Then try programming the radio. Try several other settings up an down if that doesn't work. Good luck!

My Settings

I use windows 7 with win95. My "Serial Configuration" settings are:
YES - Extra Write Time
NO - Set RTS Line High
YES - Enable "Readback" tests

Give those a shot and let us know

Worked, thanks for the assistance. Of course, I think it also helped that I went back to the Device Manager and noticed I read the wrong line on which ComPort was assigned -- it should have been 9 instead of 4.

Thanks to all for making me check it out further rather than being frustrated.

Glad it worked out

I know my com port can change since I sometimes plug in through a usb hub etc so you may have to change it again in the future. If you are trying to use the wrong port you should get the error message " Unable to open the port:\\. \COMx" where x represents whatever # the program is configured to use. The other settings being wrong will give more specific messages to the specific problem.

Another thing I've run into is the order in which the radio is connected. I always start the program first, plug into the computer second, plug into the scanner third, and lastly turn on the scanner.

It's a great program and unbelievable for being free.
