I have a new Pro97, my first scanner, and am diving in and trying to learn the finer points. I'm confused about "ZM Zeromatic."

From what I gather reading the manual, Zeromatic is used when when in search mode. The manual states that when Zeromatic mode is on ... "the scanner stops at the correct frequency," and when Zeromatic mode is off "the scanner stops when it detects an active signal."

Now first of all, this doesn't make sense. It states that the scanner "stops at" one of two conditions, either A: "the correct frequency" or B: "an active signal." Wouldn't you think that "an active signal" *IS* "the correct frequency?!?!" What exactly is "correct frequency" and how does it differ from "an active signal?" Whoever wrote this part of the manual did a poor job. My belief is that this manual author's intent was not to distinguish between two conditions that make the scanner STOP, but rather to distinguish between what the scanner does AFTER it stops.

But from what I can tell in using the scanner, there's no difference in the behavior of the scanner regardless of what Zeromatic setting is being used. It scans until it finds an avtive frequency and then stops at that frequency until two seconds after the signal ends (because DLY is set on all of them), and then it continues scanning, and it seems to me that Zeromatic mode has no effect on this behavior.

To get down to brass tacks... what I'd LIKE it to do is this.... and tell me if it's possible. I'd like to scan through the aircraft frequencies, and when it finds an active frequency it stops and stays there until I tell it to continue scanning. This is what I thought the purpose of Zeromode was. As it is now, I've only got two seconds from the end of a transmission to find and hit the PSE button to pause on a particular frequency when I detect an aircraft.

I hope you'll forgive my long winded rambling...

Thanks!

Okay, my guess is (I have a pro-97 but never read the manual..lol) if you should search through the amateur radio band (ex.) on a different scanner & the scanner detects the first frequency it hit, say 146.905, you might think it's a crappy sounding repeater, that is till you hit the search button again & it stops on 146.910 the ACTUAL frequency it's supposed ta pick up...The Zeromatic is supposed to stop its search on the ACTUAL frequency & not on the adjacent ones where there's just audio...I hope I dont confuse anyone & there's probably a better way to describe it but it's 1:30 a.m. now, please cut me some slack...lol

N4UYV_Al, thank you so much! It's making sense to me now. The author DID mean to distinguish between to different "stop" conditions.

You explained it very clearly. Now go and get some sleep! :)
