A repeater I use a lot has started to require a PTT or ANI ID. I have a four digit number, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to program it with CHIRP. I can set ANI length to 3, 4, or 5 digits; and I can control when the code is transmitted. But no idea where to put the code itself!

Your Anytone might do it, using 5 tone signaling in your software, assuming it has it, like my 5888uvIII does. I don't have any of your other rigs so not sure on those. Look for 5 tone encode select in your manual.

CHIRP has PTT ID/ANI settings in different places you need to set up.
The Settings>DTMF Settings tab has 15 PTT ID codes and one ANI code. You put the DTMF codes there.

Then on the memory channel for the repeater on the Memory Properties>Extras tab you select the ID type and code.

You need to set the speed, spacing and delay properly or the receiver/decoder might not even hear your tones.

That assumes the repeater uses DTMF. If it's something else like 5-tone or MDC1200 you are SOL.

Anytone radios Can use 5 tone encoding to set up ANI, My Triband mobile will do it.

Here's what I see for the BTECH. Still no idea which one I should be looking at. The radio reports it's set to 80808 but I don't see that string anywhere.

What he said, "ANI" could mean:

DTMF
5-Tone
MDC1200
FleetSync/FleetSync 2

Repeater owner/club should be the one giving you the format, and whether they want it pre/post, etc.
"Configure your radio to automatically send a DTMF or MDC1200 code with the code given in your profile on this website (scroll to the bottom of your profile). This four-digit code must be transmitted at the beginning of every transmission (“BOT“) for radios intending to use this repeater."

I found the setting for BOT. I cannot even begin to guess where to put the ID itself.

Try under DTMF encode options.
Best I can puzzle out, there are 15 entries there. I put my assigned code in one. Then, on the memory for the repeater, I right-clicked and chose Properties. Values I left alone, and went to Extra. There, I set PTT-ID to BOT and PTT ID signal code to the number of the channel I used under DTMF encode. No dice. I tried making "Optional signaling" DTMF instead of off, and I still don't seem to be getting out.
