How would you program a trunked system on sentinel and I don’t want to program the whole system just my site and the talkgroups I want to listen too. Help is appreciated

Which scanner do you have? First, go to the Tools tab in Sentinel and select Target Model to display the options applicable to your scanner.

Importing a trunked system in Sentinel will import every site.
You'll have to either avoid or manually delete the sites too far away from you.

Or... use location control (properly) if your radio has it, and the radio will only scan sites within range.

You can create a system, step by step, in Sentinel. and include only the sites & departments (talkgroups) that you want.

For conventional channels, you can simply append from the main database to the list you are building,

However, for trunked systems, if you appended the LCRA system to a list, it will carry over all of the sites on the system. While you can focus on only the specific departments of interest, Sentinel will grab every listed site. After creating a list via append, you can go back & edit to delete the unwanted sites, or manually set them as "avoid", or let the scanner ignore them via setting a specific location & range.

I created some FL in Sentinel at one point when I was considering the purchase of an SDS 200. I think I just did the copy and paste thing with just the stuff I wanted. That was quite a while ago. I never got the 200 and I now use Proscan to program my 996P2's, 325P2, and my 15X's. I custom program everything (copy and paste). It takes quite a while to do it initially, but once it's in, it's in.

And another good YouTube created by the architect of the DMA variety of scanners:

I also vote for the "Program 'em all, let Location Control sort them out". Let the scanner function like it was designed. Location control selects the sites and departments in your area.

Thanks great video
Yes it is, I refer many new users who don't want to go through the entire uploading and deleting unused sites. Location control is not always a fool proof way either. Quick tip from someone who does it himself, if you're programming a statewide system, follow the County column until you find the site(s) within your range. You can program the control and alternate frequencies, then find the Departments of interest then go into ID Scan. It's a trial and error, but once you get the hang of it, you then have much more flexibility in your programming, Volume Offset, Filters, Alert tones and colors, radio ID's etc. You can text tag the channels more accurately then what someone else "thinks it might be" in the database. Good luck, take your time.

Good video just don’t really trust location and I don’t want to have to lockout talkgroups I don’t want to hear because the systems I’m using my radio for LCRA and AARRS are quite big and take up multiple county’s and small municipalities.

If you don't want to just do append from the DB and delete all sites and TGs that are not wanted then do this:

Create a new system in a favorite list and choose the correct system type.
Then in Sentinels database you look up the system and click on the department with talkgroups you want to use and in the right pane you click on the first line number you want and hold down shift and click on the last one.
Right click and select to copy. Count how many lines you have copied.

In the favorite list and the new system you add a department and add exactly as many channel lines as you have copied and then click on the first line number and hold down shift and click on the last number to mark them all, or just click the square at the diagonal between channel name and channel number to mark them all, and do paste.
You can copy more lines from the database TG's and add more lines in the favorite list system and paste.

Click on the site you want in the DB and just do exactly as you did with the TG's to copy the lines with the frequencies and their additional data.

.... just don’t really trust location .....

Your location control is only as good (or bad) as you make it.
If you don't trust it, verify the correct info - and then edit it so it is accurate.

GPS/location control is one of the most (THE most?) powerful features these radios have.
Take advantage of it

I personally 'wouldn't leave home without it...'

It's just a feature, not a necessity. I never use it, and based on the question from the OP, he was looking to self program. Too many times here, I read that "this way over that way is the only way to program". Self-programming is easy to learn, you don't need to fiddle with removing sites, talkgroups you don't need or want. I've been doing it this way for many years, and never worry or go into a panic if the database isn't updated and I lose my lunch over it. Simple...edit favorite list if it's something you want, write to scanner and you don't have to wait a week. I "think" he's satisfied with the video link I provided, and hopefully he's happy with the results.

Unless the system is marked as X2-TDMA, then no, program as P25 Trunk.
Some of the Phase II systems in my area (DFW metro) are still incorrectly labeled “X2-TDMA” in Sentinel for the HP-1/-2 scanners. They are correctly labeled “P25 Phase II” in the RR database as well as in Sentinel for the x36HP & SDS series scanners.
