Dont use Mountain Pass, thats at the Nev/Ca border
Use Mountain Sim, Valley Sim, East Valley Sim
You can also look at the site location by clicking on the call letters
Also there are VHF channels as well In Regional section as well as 800 fill in
I have mostly been using the VHF channels while hiking because they seem to cover better except that I don't usually hear the initial dispatches of a fire. When I'm hiking it's usually search-and-rescue I'm listening to as well as the national forest guys. this time of year search and rescue isn't really active down in Forest Falls because even as crazy as some of the people are they don't try to hike up to the big Falls area during the the winter. LOL. I know they're on VHF as well. I bought what's called I guess a bush antenna that is a gosh two and a half feet long? And it does a really good job when I put the scanner on the frame of my backpack. I can really pick up the VHF stuff well. But now I'm realizing I'm not hearing the initial dispatches and as I'm hiking in snow and then when summer comes I kind of want to hear everything. That brings me to my point.
I noticed what I think is called a sticky post here that has the San Bernardino County VHF channels and they're not at all what I have. I downloaded an application for my Android that was written by a San Bernardino County Firefighter. It says for example that V7 covers the mountain area but the sticky said V2 I think it was? V2 seem to be more Valley traffic then Mountain on V7. I'd be happy to confirm these when I get back up there maybe this weekend. But now I want to get the phase 2 P25 system in completely and I thought it was best since I'm not just hiking in the Big Bear area to put the mountain simulcast in. I'm not sure really what that is. I mean I know what simulcast is and I know that Bertha Peak is above Stanfield cutoff in Big Bear. And of course Onyx Summit is at the crest of Highway 38. I do a lot of hiking over there so I guess what I'm over there that's what I should listen to. When I'm near Big Bear I should listen to Bertha. But anywhere else I guess I should listen to Mountain simulcast?
Here's what I have for the VHF channels now:
V1 151.145 Aerojet Chino Hills and Flash II Barstow
V2 159.120 San Sevine Lytle Creek Donnell Hill 29 Palms El Paso Ridgecrest
V3 151.1525 Quartzite Victorville Rodman Man Lucerne Trona Sheriff Tower
V4 151.0325 Onyx Big Bear SR38
V5 155.1075 Big Bear Sheriff Tower Paxton Hill Yucca Valley Spirit Mountain AKA Christmas tree
V6 154.385 Little Mtn San Bernardino Rodman Mtn Lucerne
V7 154.190 Heaps Peak Lake Arrowhead
When I'm down near Forest Falls I hear them talking about going to "their channel" but I don't see it listed on the new system. Is this an unlisted repeater that is linked? I know that area is difficult with communications in general.
Last question since you seem to know the system well and I appreciate your help, do they still use the old analog 800 system that I see listed? I know with the 996 P2 I can program them all. My Uniden P25 handheld has plenty of channels available as well so when I get out of the truck I can still hear. But I can't use the bush antenna that really only benefits VHF. They only switch to that when Cal Fire and or Forest Service join in. Fire service in the mountains is kind of confusing in general. They seem to have overlapping boundaries and everything. It's a shame can't hear the sheriff anymore.
Thank you for your help.
