To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey guys. I have a VX-354 radio and I'm trying to program it for use. I have tried installing my Prolific USB to Serial port cable. If I use the software that came with the cable, Windows gives me an error after installation that "Driver software was not successfully installed". When I delete the drivers and just plug in the usb cable it tells me all is fine. When I open the C-86 programming software and click upload, it tells me to turn on my radio. Which I do but it never sees it. I have also made sure I am using the correct port.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to resolve this? It's most frustrating.

Thank you.

In your computer look under "device manager"
Click on "com ports"
You should see prolific USB to com port adaptor
If you don't see that it means your computer doesn't recognize the cable and it won't work.
When you install the driver, make sure it's for the same version of windoze that you're using.

Sorry guys. Figured out my issue. I don't have a VX-354. I have a Vertex EVX-534. Guess I'll need the correct USB cable and software which I ordered tonight off eBay.

Isn't this fun?

Did you get the 'found new hardware' popup when you plugged the cable into the computer the very first time? If you did and it said ' found new device' then said 'searching for device drivers' then 'device now ready for use' then you're good to go on that step. If nothing happened at all, then remove the driver disc and its files left on the computer, reboot the computer, then try a different usb port and not use that driver disc. If you're using Windows XP sp3 or newer, you usually don't need the drivers on that disc anyway.

I know you wrote you're using the correct port, just make sure that computer com port is the same number as what the programming software is set to. Mine was doing the same thing (other than asking to turn the radio on) until I went to device manager and saw that cable was on port 10. I had to manually changed it to port 2 to match what the software was on.

My radio and software is much older than yours. Try turning the radio on first with the cable connected, then plug the cable into your computer, wait a moment, then open the software (as long as the computer initially saw that cable) I believe there is a video on youtube specific to programming your radio. It also says to turn the radio on after prompted to, but try turning it on first........Its worth a try.

Ignore my original post. Made it before I saw your last reply.

For others, what IS the correct cable part number for that radio?

For the EVX-530 series all I find is the CT-106 cable with the FIF-12a interface box. Pricy for both as a set, but someone has to make it without that interface box? All it does is convert the round plug to USB as far as I can tell.

From what I've been told by several dealers and also vertex themselves, ct-106 and fif-12 is the only way to program them. Wiscomm also told me that the USB cable upload to fast. They take a slow upload speed.
