Other than the live screen, what will ProScan and Butel do that Sentinel will not?

Thanks, Dan
ProScan and ARC536 can allow you to import systems and their details from the RadioReference database (as long as you remain a Premium Subscriber).

The Basic version of ARC536 (about $40) allows programming. But if you want also want the ability to use virtual control, as well as logging of activity, You would need to, instead, purchase the Pro version (about $70). ProScan,@ $50, allows programming as well as virtual control & logging. It also supports multiple other Uniden scanners.

Sentinel, which is a free download from Uniden, is required to update the database for the scanner, as well as apply any firmware updates, if & when any are released. You also need Sentinel to edit your profile, including your location, desired range, and selected service types to be monitored.

Thank you for the reply. For my use I can stay with Sentinel, I downloaded the other two and did not see anything additional I could utilize.
It does not appear I would be limited in scanning by using Sentinel.

On just the programming in ProScan:

Q: Do I need to use Sentinel or the ProScan Favorites Editor for programming for the BCDx36HP and SDSx00 series scanners?
A: Sentinel is needed for firmware updates. It's also needed for accessing the full HPDB (Uniden DB) (updated weekly for free) which is derived from the RRDB (Radio Reference DB). If you're a Premium Radio Reference Subscriber, you can import directly from the RRDB in real time. Sentinel is needed for Profile editing. ProScan doesn't have a profile editor as it would be 100% duplication that couldn't be improved on.

ProScan has extra capabilities that I don't believe Sentinel has such as:
  • Multiple Favorites on the same tree which makes it easy to Copy & Paste and Drag & Drop systems
  • Find Duplicates utility
  • Find & Replace utility
  • Update Text Tags utility
  • Import directly from RRDB. RadioReference subscription required
  • Import from the Win Clipboard or from a RR web page. No RadioReference subscription required
  • Versatile Sorting options
  • Google Maps showing all the systems with circles or rectangles
  • Export nicely formatted web page showing any or all (user selectable) FQK's, SQK's, Number Tags, and systems
  • Copy & Paste and Drag & Drop nodes to other systems and other ProScan instances
  • SDS200 FTP Read & Write using the Ethernet connection
  • View the differences between ProScan and the Scanner favorites when writing and reading to and from the scanner
  • Modify Uniden (HPDB) Database utility
  • Change the system type in one step

Sentinel: Free, you'll do firmware upgrades from it, so unfortunately need to have it installed even if you never use it for programming.

Butel: the idiots guide to scanner programming. Super easy to use, somewhat pricey for what it is depending on your scanner model

Proscan: takes some effort to read the manual and understand how to use it but has the most features for the money

Pretty much sums up my experience with the 3.

Is there any advantage between the two if you're using them for logging off a Whistler WS-1065? I would like to dedicate a spare scanner I have to logging. Not being in the scanner hobby that long, it's hard to evaluate the merits.

Whistler isn't Uniden, you would need software designed for Whistler to do your logging, unless the Whistler has that ability built in.

Ah! Bummer. I have (3) new Whistler WS-1065 scanners so I don't think I'll need a Uniden. Oh well. I tried.

Thank you. On my next day off I will spend the day learning Proscan. It looks like it will be worth my time to dig out the little gems the creator has put into it.

The problem I have with Butel is that I would need to spend over $200.00 for 4 different versions to work with all of my scanners. Proscan, on the other hand, costs $50.00 and one version works with all of my scanners.

I have a question about Proscan software. I am a new bcd436hp owner (not new to scanning) and I am learning about using NC VIPER trunked system on my scanner to make favorite lists for various in NC. Specifically what does
  • Multiple Favorites on the same tree which makes it easy to Copy & Paste and Drag & Drop systems
mean and would it help with setting up my scanner using a large trunked system and splitting it up over different counties using the same radio system and different talkgroups used by the individual county services?

Thank you,

Richard

I'm waiting for Vonskie to get hold of a Whistler scanner so he can support it in his excellent ScannerScreen program. That program can log all scanner activities as well as displaying a virtual scanner screen on a PC.
