PSR-500 stuck button

Anyone ever run into a sticky button on the PSR500?

I have a few that I use only to push Pro96Com and this week one of them crapped out. Continuous beeping, acting like a key is being pressed every second. Tried the factory reset (push 0 followed by 6 on startup during the welcome text) to no avail; it thinks another button is being pressed.

To be fair, I've had this one since sometime in 2008 or so, which makes this not unexpected.

Have you tried to disassemble it to clean the button contacts? Am not familiar with this model, asking since many scanners are able to be cleaned.

There are threads out there on the topic. Its either the contacts flaking off or they are dirty. If you have the ability to take it apart, I would first check for the contacts coming apart as seen here.

OK thanks. I ran a quick search but I guess the terms I entered weren't enough.

I'll break it open this weekend and take a look (it's the one I use at work, but I took it home yesterday). Thankfully the other half is an electronics master with a full bench and tool set

Well, I got the radio disassembled and found that the paint has definitely worn away.

I further discovered that the tiny jar of the capacitive paint we have in the house has become a solid chunk. I even cut it in half to see if there was anything useable in the center to no avail. Off to Amazon, I guess.

Has any tried the capacitive ink/paint pens?

Over the years I have on quite a few TV remote controls (same principle). Make sure the rubber is clean before applying the coatings (the nooks/crannies hold oils that do not help in keeping the pads clean before applying). Good luck!
