Well i have a mixed bag.I have both the 106 and 197.with different results. On both of my 106s the volume knob seems stiff or tight. On the 197 the knob has a lot of play and is got to be on a sweet spot to be neither too loud or too low.My GRE-500s seem to be right on volume wise.Just my 2 cents

I could have dug up an even older post about this !

I have had a GRE PSR-600 for years and I like it so much that I just purchased a Pro-197 on sale for $300. The only thing that I do not like about these GRE scanners is the volume is just too loud. So what can I do about this ? I opened up one of these scanners today and removed the white + wire from the speaker. Then I tried various sizes of resistors. I would soldered the white wire to one end of the resistor and the other end of the resistor onto the + speaker post. I settled on a very tiny resistor that gave me the just result that I was looking for. I now have that scanner's volume set at the 2:00 position for easy listening. It sounds great now. What was the value of the resistor that worked so well for me ? You guys can try this on your scanners and find the result that works best for you. Good luck and have fun with it.

I have old 2096's that have the same action. One of them is on 24-7 so I always make sure to set the volume by opening the squelch on a conventional frequency and setting it carefully so the OL won't flip out if it wakes her up.
It would be nice on all GRE's if they had a little more friction in the volume controls.

My solution was to order a new one from RS parts ($10 I think) and swap it out. Now I have a good one.

Great, do you have a part number for this pot? Also any tips for those wanting to replace the stock control on your psr600 or maybe on the r/s pro-197?

Thanks,

My 500 seems to have about 5 degrees of travel between LOUD and s o f t ........

It's the linear pot, I'm sure...

Yup, the volume control is real touchy. Needs so be set just a little bit beyond 9:00. Too bad otherwise they are great scanners. I retired my 197 to the kitchen and got a 996XT for the bedroom, which is much easier to live with.

I do not have that issue with my PSR-500.
