yeah theres a screw up somewhere because I definitely don't have 1.0 on both...
on the update screen it says "F1.0 U1.8"

and im using Windows 7...

Sound like a driver issue and software not detecting scanner as CPU firmware on your scanner is updated to 1.8 for phase 2 update.Their is a update 1.9 for Edacs patch. DSP firmware may not be updated.

Go to start bar and in search bar, type "device manager" under control panel section and click on that icon. Look to see if scanner driver is installed and no errors and highlighted? in yellow, If it is then you need to manually install driver.

I do have the driver, but would have to figure a way to sent it to you if you don't have the CD. The driver is not included on the GRE website as they only give you the, "EZ ScanDG Utility Manager", or on the SD card. It's on the CD the scanner came with. It's in the INF folder. When in device manager. You have to right click the psr-800 and then go to driver tab. Then click update driver. Then click browse computer for driver software. Then click browse. Go to where driver is, if you have CD, goto CD drive letter and then INF folder. Then click next. and you will get a error about unsigned driver, click OK to allow and it sure work.

Windows 7 - How to install unsigned drivers?

Can you do a print screen of device manager?

Yes it will say that it installed the most up to date, but might not be functioning. If it in yellow, or expanded. Then it not installed correctly and fails as Windows 7 and 8 will block it from installing correctly by default due to it's being unsigned. You have to follow the steps on that link for Windows 7 unsigned drivers and then restart computer, uninstall the driver and reinstall manually for it to work. Your get a red message warning about driver being unsigned and just allow it to continue and then it sure work, if that the problem. Could be port issue to.

The other way to update it is to hold menu and power and you will get scanner into programming mode. Plug into USB port, then try to flash CPU firmware.

Beside Edac's patch you are up to date and ready for phase 2. DSP is up to date.

Yep so I tried everything with the driver stuff - uninstalled , reinstalled, restarted...
and still the same "not detected" problem...

But now that I see that I at least have the firmware for Phase 2 up to date I guess I can live with that...

However I would like to have everything updated if possible so if you could tell me more about that "Flash firmware" method that would be great...

and what exactly does that EDACS update do? Because the EDACS system that I have programmed does seem a bit scratchy at times...

thanks again

One question did forget to ask. Is do you have scanner power off while trying update? You have to have scanner power off, or won't detect and leave it off. while it plus into USB port.

Did find another work around and just try it on my scanner to see if this will also work.

Since do know the serial controller is made by FTDI in the PSR-800. Give me a few minute and I explain how you force these drivers as you have to extract the package and manually install the driver. Just verified and it does work.

You going to need to download and install WinRAR

http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

Then go to link below and click "SAVE-AS" to windows to desktop, so you can see it

Virtual COM Port Drivers

Then right click on EXE you just downloaded it say "CDM v2.12.00 WHQL Certified" and click "Extract here"

Then go to driver manager and click "update driver"

Then click "Browse my computer for driver software"

Then click "Let me pick from list of drivers on my computer"

Then click "Have Disk"

Then click "Browse"

Then click on "Desktop"

Then select "ftdiport"

Then click "open"

Then click "OK"

Then click "Next"

On warning pop up click "Yes"

Click "Yes" on red warning about unsigned driver

Then click "close"

It sure work, if not, you scanner serial controller IC maybe defective.

After finish it sure look like this.

If you do a search of the forums on psr-800 driver someone has one out there on a post from back a few years.

It's what I used to add the drivers on a new pc when I couldn't find them elsewhere. I would go into your device manager and eliminate the current one after getting the one from the forums. Then go into device manager and tell it to update driver (or plug the radio in and have it start looking) it won't find it in windows update but should find if you save it on your system.

Might need to point it where you saved it... can't remember.

Your problem all along is ezscan not finding the scanner due to driver problem. You can go forever by just taking the card, plugging it into your card drive and updating the database that way.

But I have not found a way to do firmware without it being through the drivers and scanner.

Last thing you could try is remove the batteries and pop out the Micro SD card and reinsert it and the batteries. Also make sure scanner not plug into a USB hub and try a different USB port on the computer, if you haven't already. I would try a different PC if you have one available just to test. If nothing works then port, or serial controller IC in scanner defective.

Like you said you can use it as it is as it ready for phase II and you can still do database updates to SD card, as scanner still works and has CPU 1.8 and DSP 1.3 firmware updates. So not a issue for what you need it for.

On the 800, I read where some folks had to press the menu button on the scanner to update it. Also remove the batteries and switch the switch to the all position. Hope this may help

So now I tried taking the SD card and the batteries out and putting them back in , switching the battery modes, etc - still nothing...

But heres a observation - when I put it in update mode by holding the menu button down as I plug the usb in the display reads "CPU Sw upgrade : Waiting for USB" but if I hold the menu button down the entire time as its checking for the update the display then just says "CPU SW Upgrade"...
Not sure if that makes a difference or what
either way nothing worked...

You need to let go of button once you see "CPU Sw upgrade : Waiting for USB" and scanner powered up.The problem is you can't get it to communicate to your computer for some reason. At this point, scanner seem more to the issue. As you tried almost everything.

Would like to see a picture of the driver manager open, to check to see if driver did install correctly and not showing up as malfunctioning, or Windows stop it mid way due to the driver signature was not found, or firewall blocking. If it appear to be shown correctly installed, then it could be something else and could be a defective scanner, as port could be bad, or USB to serial IC is bad. The other thing you can do is try a different SD card and prepare it in a card reader, as it faster, then put it in scanner, just to make sure it not corrupted. Most important make sure you try a different USB port, one in the rear of the computer would be preferred.

With the picture of device manager it would help to troubleshoot this and not something else.

It might help just to eliminate 2 things from the list. Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus. Also was this radio bought used? Not that it matters, but it could have had the issue before getting it.

Driver looks installed, the other thing to check is. Right click on USB serial port com 6 and go to port settings. Makes sure bits per seconds is 9600 and data bits is 8. Also disable windows firewall and when you go to start the software, right click and run as administrator. If you can, try a different PC, or ask a friend to try it out. To rule out some strange software issue. If another PC don't work and same results, scanner then is the issue and more likely has bad serial controller IC.

Also try a different SD card 16 GB, or under and class 4, or higher. 8GB would be ideal. Do know it has inherent problems with the larger cards and will also cause scanner not to update and long boot times.

same problem as darkstar...

... really need help here... I need phase 2 as I use Philly radio... I've tried all solutions offered, have right driver, reinstalled ez scan, moved info from card to program... the update seemed to go fine...updated to 1.9 and 1.3 without a hitch so the program tells me... phase 2 does not work correctly and when I hold menu and turn on it says 1.9 and 1.0... the 1.0 isn't going to get me phase 2... I've read these post carefully, I've run scanners since the first ones in the sixties and have a good grasp on what I'm doing... we have the best minds out there so help me upgrade to 1.3 so phase 2 will work???... Bob...
