Pulling my hair out.

I just got a GRE PSR-500 scanner form ebay, and I have followed Fort's programming guide, but I still can't get the OPP on this thing, not sure what I am doing wrong. When I did program it using Fort's guide, it said it had unsaved changes, but I made sure that the changes were saved. I need help since I have programmed and re-programmed this thing all afternoon lol.

it sounds like you might have not put it in a scan list when you program fleetnet make sure this * is at the scanlist number for example *1 then follow forts instructions

I tried it again, hit scan, and it said nothing enabled, grrr lol. I notice that Fort's instructions say to go scroll down ri 138-174 5KHz... make sure its set to Yes, save the changes, but it has been changed to Bandplan Canada, now do I save that after selecting it?

I have got things working now, I am embarrassed to say that it was mostly a bad signal problem, the stuff was programmed okay, but since the apartment is partially in the ground believe it or not, the signal was just crappy, and I had to figure out a good place for the scanner.

You are correct about the Bandplan=US/Canada though... that is in the newer firmware instead of the 138-174 5khz option. Unfortunately I can't edit the sticky to update that.

Dont feel embarrased about anything. You had questions and you were calm and collected and resonable.
First of all, unless you have had experience, GRE scanners can be a b*tch to program by software and even harder by hand but you did and you got it right!

As for your antenna, generally the stock antenna that comes with GRE items is good enough for local motorola and EDACS channels and systems in the 800 meg range but poor for fleetnet which is VHF Hi.

I you have extra $ you can invest in a Diamond antenna that is designed for fleetnet and for the 400 MEg band

The first one I used for many years, it is a good deal better than the stock antenna of any RS GRE and Uniden scanners I have owned
SRH-77CA [DIA-SRH77CA] - $35.00 : Radioworld

The second one is tiny, it wont work as well as a Diamond77CA but it might fit your needs. I used it for a week and traded it in

SRH-805 [DIA-SRH805] - $45.00 : Radioworld

Durham has also a good selection of antennas, have a look here:

You might want to try the following antenna. It is darn good for the buck, short, you can put it on anything metal and stick it near a window and you will be surprised by the results. I use it as my main home antenna.

I do not want to recomend Durham I would rather deal with Lakeshore Electronics and Radio World for reasons I do not want to publically share. The KS3 antenna at Lakeshore Electronics is a few bucks cheaper and the contacts there will help you recommend better mag mounts or base antennas as well, many of the members here live to help out others and can recommend and be very helpful.

Thanks I really appreciate the help, that Diamond antenna really has my attention, and I think I'll invest in that one. I guess a Diamond antenna is a scanner's best friend lol.
