The SDRPlay can be purchased at your local Ham Radio Outlet.
I would say that the 2 front runners in the lower-end SDR world are the SDRPlay and the Airspy. The Airspy is only available online, to my knowledge.
Beyond those 2, you are heading towards the $1000+ range.
In addition to an SDRPlay, I have numerous RTL dongles which are not the best. However, I find that for the price, they work pretty darn good, especially decoding digital voice and data. Some people hate 'em, but I find that they work great - DSDPlus and 2 RTLSDR's are hard to beat for under $50.

I'm not familiar with the Waterloo region, but usually, online stores charge less than brick and mortar ones.
What's your budget.. You can get a dongle style radio for 25 - 30 dollars, but "Good" SDR receivers can cost over $1000.

Not accurate at all. Somehow, we're ignoring the bandpass filter and mixer/downconverter that sit between the preamp and the ADC?

Entry Level SDR's Not Ready For Noobs
Unlike entry level stand alone scanners & receivers, in my humble opinion today's entry level SDR's need more work to make them more user friendly & to develop a loyal return purchase equipment base, at this time after discarding a number of NooElect sticks & an SDR Play box I just settled for tried & true knob & button R-75's VX-5500's & an AOR SR2000AB for spectral display, the combinations have yet to fail me. Thanks for reading.
