Say you install the WS1095 into your car and hook the power up to the ignition.

1st question: If the scanner is switched on but you turn the ignition off, killing the power, does this corrupt the SD card/operating system?

2nd Question (related to above): If the scanner is switched on and you kill the power externally via the ignition, will the scanner automatically come back on when you switch the ignition back on?

3rd Question: If the scanner is switched on and you start the motor, does the low battery voltage cause any problems?

The only way to run these radios is directly to the battery. The only issue .. unlike some of my ham rigs, it does not have a sleep / auto off option. So .. you have to be sure that you shut it off. That is the one thing that these radios need .. otherwise, if you hook it to the ignition .. and power is killed yes you could corrupt the card.

It is no different than it sitting on my desk .. you kill the power and you take your chances. I have accidentally killed the power on mine a few times, and sometimes I corrupt it .. and sometimes I don't.

I would keep a spare programmed SD card if using it in the car.

I can see where it could be an issue for some. My ham gear in my car .. is not an SD card based unit so I never worry about it. My 1095 is not in my car .. as it would be gone in 10 min where I live. ;-)

Thanks edmscan, I had a feeling this would be the case.

I wonder why Uniden and Whistler both design SD based mobile/base scanners without a remote power up/down input that you can connect to the vehicle's ignition supply.

I feel for the guys who have to start/stop their vehicle multiple times a day and have to remember to manually switch their scanner off and on each time. What a pain in the proverbial.

These scanners really are crying out for an ignition sense (auto power up/down) function.

I guess I should feel lucky that all of my outlets are constant on then. ;)

Provided, of course, that I don't forget to turn my 1095 off and it sits for several days.

Be nice if Whistler would incorporate a programmable power down timer.
My IC-208h is set to power down after 3 hours (after the last button push or PTT etc).

Wouldn't be hard to do since the power up/down in the WS series scanners is all controlled by the cpu anyway.

How bout it Whislter? A new menu function for the WS-1095 and 1098 :)?

My 1095 is on 24/7. It never gets shut off. Mind you .. it is only used for recording. I do not use it for scanning.
