To summarize what I did ;) :

So far WFview is easy to use and since it's free you can't complain about it missing some of the fancier hooks into the R8600's controls and settings. I think it's a great way to get into remote control of the radio and discover what features are most important to you.

If you are an iOs user it's a pretty cheap upgrade to SDR-Control at $37 for the iPhone and $50 for an iPad. However, my iPad is really old so I'd have to buy a new one. Not cheap....

I also just ran across another freeware, SDR Console SDR-Radio.com - Software Defined Radio | Home but it is for limited local control only as far as I can see.
