i live in the north liberty iowa area . this past week i've been receiving johnson's new digital system pretty good until about noon 7/21/11 thursday. now i don't receive even a signal from them. i'm still getting cedar rapids okay. anybody in my area having the same trouble? thanks jim

Let me ask a question. I have monitored RACOM and expect to do so when I travel to Iowa soon.

Can EDACS digital be monitored? I thought EDACS digital was Pro-Voice.

EDACS digital can either be AEGIS or ProVoice, neither one can be monitored with off-the-shelf scanners.

Iowa, Limited Scanning Future?

Well, that is surely bad news for those living here. Hopefully, the system will only incorporate Federal, EMS, & transportation; however, I suspect many more agencies will be following.

I can honestly say I would not move to a state that used a large scale version of Pro-Voice.

Sloan is rather slow compared to Waco, Houston, Dallas, but quite interesting when things pop off.

Thanks for your comments.

RACOM is not entirely Aegis or pro voice... I would say that most of it is analog. And I think you may be confused what racom is.... racom is a private company that leases out its network... it is not a state run system and most of the time, police departments and such don't use racom.

There are multiple exceptions to this as marshalltown police and Marshall county Sheriff do use RACOM full time as well as several state agencies and agencies in the Scott county area....

The point I am trying to get across is that this is not primarily a public safety network. Where I live, the only people who use RACOM regularly is the prison. EMA and the hospital have access... but their normal communications are via their own frequencies.

burner50 is correct, the only agencies that use RACOM as their primary communications method is Blawkhawk county, including Waterloo and Cedar Falls PD/FD; Polk county including Altoona, Pleasant Hill, Johnston, Polk City, Mitchellville and technically Ankeny; Marshall county; Quad Cities area; and Dubuque. Other than those major metros, their primary customers are utilities companies for voice/data and the occasional business. The use of ProVoice/AEGIS is relatively limited, and it really doesnt impede much as far as monitoring goes. Yes, you do miss some of the 'good stuff' but you can still hear all the dispatch and chit chat talkgroups. When P25 rolls around in the future im sure everything will be encrypted just because it is so easy to implement nowadays.

Well, hopefully, the "E" will be limited in application.

Yes, I've heard some EMS activity here in Sloan, but that is about it.

Thanks for you feedback.
