I'll be in Saskatchewan for a couple of weeks in July, and of course I'll be bringing the portable along to compare reception between the prairies and this radio-blocked valley between mountain ranges. I'm sure it will be like a breath of fresh air. This won't be a DXpedition, mind you; I don't plan to listen quite that much.
Well, over the past couple of weeks I took my Sangean ATS-909X out to a public park in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and listened with just the whip antenna. At approximately the same time I usually listen (early evening) every HF station I either could barely make out or couldn't pick up at all at my home location, even outside on my balcony, came in quite strong. In my hotel room, however, the RFI was much worse than in my apartment. Lots of new noises, and on more frequencies, too. Listening at the window didn't help one bit, and I'm sure the metal roof of the hotel made matters a lot worse.
I also tried to pick up Moose Jaw's NDB (V1) on 272 kHz, but heard nothing, even outdoors. Maybe it's been decommissioned. On the other hand, the NDB at Lethbridge, Alberta (QL on 248 kHz) came in strong even inside a hotel.
