I'll be in Saskatchewan for a couple of weeks in July, and of course I'll be bringing the portable along to compare reception between the prairies and this radio-blocked valley between mountain ranges. I'm sure it will be like a breath of fresh air. This won't be a DXpedition, mind you; I don't plan to listen quite that much.
Well, over the past couple of weeks I took my Sangean ATS-909X out to a public park in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and listened with just the whip antenna. At approximately the same time I usually listen (early evening) every HF station I either could barely make out or couldn't pick up at all at my home location, even outside on my balcony, came in quite strong. In my hotel room, however, the RFI was much worse than in my apartment. Lots of new noises, and on more frequencies, too. Listening at the window didn't help one bit, and I'm sure the metal roof of the hotel made matters a lot worse.

I also tried to pick up Moose Jaw's NDB (V1) on 272 kHz, but heard nothing, even outdoors. Maybe it's been decommissioned. On the other hand, the NDB at Lethbridge, Alberta (QL on 248 kHz) came in strong even inside a hotel.

Good luck on your test ! Bill's correct - you won't have to worry about spare cash once you get you license.

My plans for this year are to collect as many North American NDBs before they all shut down. Making progress - a short list on my QRZ page if you're looking for stations close by to hunt for.

Well I pulled the trigger & ordered a SDS100, hope to get by Wed, and hope all bugs are fixed. And hoping to get my FIRST Ham license in a couple weeks, if I pass I still have a couple bucks left over : )

My plans for this year is pass the Ham license examination next month and become a ham here in the US. I was a ham in Europe in my teens, but moved away from the hobby when left Europe, now that I have a little more time and "funds", I can return to it.
