Pro-2051

I am going to try the radio shack software for $20. If that doesn't work, then I am not sure--still researching. You would think scanning software would be relatively easy to produce.

I understand that Jim Springer is working on adding PRO-2051 support for Scancat Lite Plus. I don't know his expected release date, tho.

Speaking of Software and the 2051...

I emailed Butel and recieved this reply....

Hi,

Our ARC8 software will not with the Pro-2051.

We have started development of software for the pro-2051, and should
hopefully be available in July/August.

Kind regards,

Gommert Buysen

It is - a user interface, a database, a serial port handler. It's getting the entire spec for the scanner that's not simple. Once you know what comes out of the port and what has to go back into it, writing the software is mainly deciding what you want to write and how to present it. Writing a simple little POS or bookkeeping program is a lot more difficult.

I have Scanner Pro, for a PRO-2052 I used to have. I tried it with the PRO-2051, but no-go. Both are manufactured by Uniden, but the PRO-2052 has a DB9 serial port, and the PRO-2051 has PC/IF 1/8" phone-plug port.

Uniden has release a PDF for the control codes used in their BCT8 (close enough?). Here is the link:

http://www.uniden.com/rn_productsupport_downloads.cfm?product=BCT8

The PRO-2051 appears to be a glorified BCT8, with it's 1,000 channels, vs 250 in the BCT8, SkyWarn, and Signal Stalker.

Yep. I also have their document for the 396. But I don't write software for hardware I don't have available. Too many differences between specs and the hardware they're written about. Uniden may be better than Epson (don't ask), but once burned ...

Jim is good at adding new scanners to his software. Yet adding a new scanner and the software working with it does not happen. It does not work with the Pro-96 and after three months he still has not fixed the problems.

Boy do I feel stupid

I am new to this forum - So bear with me please if this has been discussed before.

I bought the 2051 for my daughter as a Firefighter Academy Grad -gift (proud Daddy!). I will be installing it in her car. On RS web site they advertise this scanner (here is the copied and pasted text):

• Program scanner using your PC (requires cable #20-289, sold separately)

I bought the
Data Loading Sofware w/Cable 20-048
The clerk and the store manager confirmed it would work with the PRO-2051.

Obviously, after getting frustrated I thought I might find the answers here. And I did. just thought I would drop a line and say thanks for ending my frustration. I thought I was doing things wrong.

But, I do have a couple of questions. I hope its ok to post them on this thread.

I got the 2051 on sale for $149.00 is there another scanner in that price range that has similar features and CAN be programmed from the computer. Also, would it have alpha tagging? ( as you can see I have been reading just enough here to make me dangerous )?

Or - is this scanner a good value considering its features?

I am old school scanner - I have an old Pro-39 that is very easy to program and does not have frequencies blocked.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Pro-95 with the 20-289 cable and Don Starr's free Win95 program (http://www.starrsoft.com/freeware/win95/apps/Win95.zip). Note - the 20-048 cable will not work with the newer scanners, regardless of what the salesdroids tell you.

Of course, the Pro-95 is a portable, so 1) you'd need a 12 volt adapter and 2) mounting it could challenge you. (A cellphone holder would work.)

I'm pretty sure you're mixing up the 2053 (which is the base version of the PRO93/95) with the 2051 which is most definitely not related. I sincerely doubt that this would work. I would, however, be quite happy to be proven wrong

I've read on the Scancat list that it seems that the protocols for the 2051 haven't been fully (or correctly) documented, and what has been released has been somewhat inaccurate. I think Gommert is probably running into the same type of problem. In addition, Ken D. over on the Scan Control board has declined to support the scanner.

Evidently part of the problem is that the protocols look like GRE, but some of the hardware is a Uniden clone (I know, that doesn't make any sense). So looks like it'll be some time before some reliable software is available.
